"The Venus Bellona"
Proscriptor is the drummer/mainman of Plano, Texas' very own Absu. "The Venus Bellona" is a wonderfully strange & unique concept album based around the mythology of Proscriptor's ancestral bloodline which hails from Glencoe, Scotland. A myriad of instruments are used here, including synths, percussion, acoustic guitar, grand piano, bagpipes(!), & fife; the 21 hymns of Pictish Bloodlust presented here range in sound from ambient/darkwave to experimental folk (all exceptionally well done). For a bit of "new wave" nostalgia, a twisted version of "I Ran (So Far Away)" (originally by A Flock of Seagulls) is covered & given a bracing, & thoroughly entertaining, extreme metal/"Fuck You!" (brutal!) treatment!
Imported from Sweden (on Cruel Moon/Cold Meat)

"The Third Storm of CYTHRAUL"
"...well-played Retrockin' ThrashBlack, SLAYEResque in a crude way... the drums get a decent production for once. And there is plenty to excite SODOM-ites & 80's Thrash obsessives, just as there's enough to cling onto if you're of a more recent vintage (the vocals sound like Dani Filth's cousin, as it were)." - from Terrorizer mag's review (issue #39)
"The Third Storm of Cythraul" is, as its title implies, Absu's third album. It is also by far their most vicious, a potent cocktail of aggression & mysticism which combines thunderous atmospherics with cataclysmic Metal of the Old School variety. This latter style is something which set apart album #2, "The Sun of Tipareth", from the large majority of other records at the time of its release in 1995, & in many ways Absu pre-empted the Retro-Thrash movement before anyone had even thought of it as a genre (&/or trend) in its own right. Although, in a way, Slayer references are inevitable no matter what kind of Death, Black, Speed, or Thrash Metal you play, the sound on "The Third Storm..." is more reminiscent of German heroes such as Sodom, Kreator, & Destruction."- from Terrorizer mag's review (issue #40)
