The band
was formed in 1995 by Patrik Lindgren, Jocke Kristensson, Peter Lof, and
Kimmy Sjolund. From the beginning the band was meant to be a project as
Patrik and Jocke put their main force into their other band Pantheon. The
Northern mythology and the Viking age was of interest to all the members,
so the lyrics and the concept was focused upon this subject. The music was
rather primitive and built upon slow pounding drums, heavy guitars, and
synth melodies.
After two demos that gained a good deal of response in the underground,
Thyrfing signed to the dutch label Hammerheart Records in 1997. Choosing
among the most respected studios in Sweden, the choice fell upon Sunlight
Studios in Stockholm, and the debut album was put on tape in July/August.
The band had progressed since the start, with a lot more variation in the
song-writing since the demo days. The album included ten songs, and the
package was completed by an amazing cover artwork by Belgian artist Kris
Verwimp.
The album was released in March '98 and received overall good responses
from the metal audience. This album was an important step for the band, but
still it was just the beginning. Thyrfing immediately started to write new
songs after the recording and the music took a more symphonic touch, still
sticking with the heart of the older material. The band signed for another
album on Hammerheart, and this time it was recorded in Abyss studio. With a
cleaner, more powerful production, "Valdr Galga" is an endless orgy of
power and melodies that must be heard.
So put on this CD, and prepare for 11 hymnic songs that will take your soul
back to an age when the sword was mightier than everything!
