From the opening woodwinds and melodic arrangements, to the multi-layered vocal harmonies, the recording is brimming with grandiose ideas. Lyrically �ystein and Vintersorg take turns describing the universe and our place in it. in an erudite and eloquent fashion. Marked by an ever-changing metamorphosis, BORKNAGAR's sound has helped to form a genre (Progressive Nordic Metal) while constantly redefining itself.

BORKNAGAR's sixth full-length release overall. Featuring members and alumni of VINTERSORG, SOLEFALD, EMPEROR, SATYRICON, OTYG, TESTAMENT, CRONIAN, MOLESTED, FISSION, and SPIRAL ARCHITECT. Members of DIMMU BORGIR, IMMORTAL, GORGOROTH, CRADLE OF FILTH, ENSLAVED, ARCTURUS, DODHEIMSGARD, AGE OF SILENCE, and ULVER have also served time in BORKNAGAR in the past as well.

Reading more like naturalist poetry or philosophy, the album addresses the universe and its founding, man and his beginnings, and nature and our unnatural actions that keep us locked in an internal struggle. Constantly redefining itself, BORKNAGAR mainman / guitarist �ystein G. Brun has broken ground with every release since their self-titled album in 1996. Black Metal's royalty have handled vocal duties in the past: beginning with Garm (ARCTURUS, ULVER), and then passing the torch to Simen Hestnaes, aka ICS Vortex (DIMMU BORGIR), the mantle passed in 2001 to vocalist Vintersorg (VINTERSORG, FISSION) whose gifted use of melodic and harmonic experimentation, coupled with a multitude of vocal styles set the tone for 'Origin's sonic cacophony. Drummer Asgeir Mickelson (SPIRAL ARCHITECT, TESTAMENT) heightens the flowing rhythmic river with his artistic accentuated timekeeping. Returning is keyboardist Lars A. Nedland (SOLEFALD, AGE OF SILENCE) who provides a myriad of atmospheric soundscpaes and harmonic interludes, as well as bassist Tyr (EMPEROR, SATYRICON) who sat out 2004's 'Epic'.

Successfully creating a concentrated yet clear sound at Norway's Toproom Studios (TRISTANIA, EXTOL) on their last 3 albums, the band returned to record guitars with co-producer Borge Finsted (MAYHEM, ARCTURUS). Utilizing several recording studios, the band captured vocals, violin, cello, drums and percussion at multimono, bass at Low and Below Studios, and bamboo flute and recorders at Musikk & Mystikk. Several guest musicians appear including Norwegian musical icon Steinal Ofsdal playing woodwinds. Eight new songs and 'Oceans Rise' from 'The Archaic Course' (re-worked) are contained herein.
