What is BLACK METAL?
Most agree that the term BLACK METAL originated with the phrase in the VENOM album, "Black Metal" in the early 1980s. As a musical genre, it grew from there to spawn such underground legends as BATHORY and HELLHAMMER/CELTIC FROST.
  
Then came the Norwegian explosion of metal onslaught with such groups in the early 90's as MAYHEM, IMMORTAL, and EMPEROR. These bands drew influences from VENOM, BATHORY, CELTIC FROST and others to form a new genre of metal music - Modern Black Metal, and more specifically, Norwegian Black Metal, Viking Black Metal, and Scandinavian Black Metal.
We highly recommend you find yourself a copy of the book Lords Of Chaos - "The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground" by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind. This book goes into great detail about the history and legacy of BLACK METAL - much more so than we could possibly do here on this one page.
