	as someone already, exactly what black metal should sound like: a challenge. well structured songs, each around an unequivocably dark theme; interesting production (grit, plain and simple, but done more interestingly than i've ever heard, especially on the occasional vocals; will be more engaging than something like transylvanian hunger, which is at first just disgusting); no lyrics to cloud the mood (at least i find it a plus). take the trance-inducing elements of burzum's filosofem and add a progressive structure and that's xasthur...sort of. find out for yourselvs.

	Here's an exceptionally grim & misanthropic release from this one-man Black Metal band from Vinland (aka North America). Malefic has constructed 8 hymns of dark hate & melancholic despair, which are enhanced by a very raw & crusty production. Dealing mainly in cold atmospherics, the songs range from mid-tempo to occasionally slow doom - proving that it's NOT necessary to have mindless blasting to create great Black Metal "Muzak" (or Death Metal for that matter). XASTHUR's "Nocturnal Poisoning" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! And it's the latest middle finger coming from the USBM scene that is pointed toward those narrow-"Euro"minded folks who refuse to acknowledge that quality Black Metal could ever come from the States. FUCK OFF!!!

	This cd is the *reason* we listen to black metal. Nostalgic of early 90's Norwegian blackmetal, especially Manes, with guitar disharmonies prevailing left and right, yet, without sounding like a copycat band. It hasn't left my player since I got it. If this album disappoints you, you are braindead. Perfect in every sense.
