ROTTING CHRIST Genesis

Description:
While 'Genesis' means "source" and "origin", it also alludes to the first book of the Bible's Old Testament. With their aptly named new album Genesis, Greece's Rotting Christ have returned to their roots, pushing the aggression even further than Genesis' predecessor, Khronos (2000). Yet, the aggression that recalls Rotting Christ's Century Media debut Triarchy Of The Lost Lovers (1996) is tempered by the musical experience the quintet has accrued through more than a decade of recordings and performances.

Rotting Christ's renewed commitment to sonic brutality is reflected not only in their choice of album titles, but also in their decisions to revert to their original logo and revisit Andy Classen's Stage One Studio (Krisiun, Asphyx, Callenish Circle). Returning to the studio in which they recorded Triarchy Of The Lost Lovers, Rotting Christ continued exploring their unique blend of raging Black Metal and infectious melodies to create one of their most foreboding and punishing recordings to date.

The Rotting Christ story began in 1987 when the group formed under the influence of bands like Bathory, Venom and Celtic Frost. After one EP (Passage To Arcturo), Rotting Christ were signed by French Label Osmose Records, through which they continued spreading their unholy message with Thy Mighty Contract (1993). By that time, Rotting Christ were already considered among the world's Black Metal elite.

After the success of Non Serviam (1995), their second full-length album, the band signed to Century Media Records. 1996's Triarchy Of The Lost Lovers realized the group's potential and further cemented the band's international reputation. After two successful European tours, the band entered Germany's renowned Woodhouse Studio with creative mastermind Xy (Samael) as producer. With united forces, Rotting Christ took their music to the next level, this time concentrating on the epic qualities of their sinister sound. A Dead Poem managed to reach a wider audience without betraying their blackened roots. Shortly thereafter, the band were shaken by line-up changes, but nevertheless managed to thrive, touring over 20 countries, including Turkey, Israel, Bulgaria and all of South America in 1998.

In late 1998, Rotting Christ headed back to Woodhouse Studio (again with producer Xy) to explore new ground once again. Sleep Of The Angels, dominated by Gothic influenced Dark Metal, proved that the band were perfectly capable of handling the challenge of expanding their sound and landed the band tours with bands like Cradle Of Filth.

Despite the success of the album and tours, the band rediscovered their fondness for the darker Black Metal sounds that characterized their early recordings. A year later, Rotting Christ entered the famous Abyss Studio in Sweden with Sakis as producer (and a helping hand from Hypocrisy's Lars Szke and mixing by Peter Tagtgren). The band recorded Khronos and, soon after, toured Europe with Tristania, Vintersorg and label-mates Madder Mortem, during which they were further convinced that they were right to pursue the heaviest and darkest music possible.

Just a few days prior to recording Genesis, Rotting Christ played a great one-off in London with Gothic Metal heroes My Dying Bride. Riding the momentum of the show, they secluded themselves between May and June 2002 in order to solely focus on producing the nightmarish, yet still catchy Genesis - an album primed to appeal to the old-school fans as well as those who prefer their more sophisticated and epic tunes.
