Creepy, totally dark & atmospheric, doomy Black Metal from Suomi Finland (recorded at Perkele); extreme Satanic, vampyric, & blasphemous darker metal by Demonos, Infernus, Sulphur, & Pimea. The title, "Eerie" is a great description that just about totally sums up, this their 2nd. album-- this time, these Finnish demons concentrate on a more straight-ahead black atmosphere without compromising their unique & distinctive twist (for Black Metalheads on acid trips!). A desperate journey of evil doom complete with howling wolves & winds, spacey keyboards, heart-pounding drums, tortured moans, grimly sour vokills, & thrashy guitar sure to put a cold chill through your disintegrating spine!

"Stormblade"
The mighty warriors of sexual blasphemy (from New Zealand) return with another full-length album of raging, melodic, Venom (& other 80's metal)-inspired Blackened Rock & Roll! At times blasting chaos & grind, other times anthemic (recalling Manowar & Wasp!), always unpredictable, always lively & amusing-- these belligerent, tatooed, beer-soaked metalheads really deliver the heavy rockin' goods! *(Note: the "secret" Outro track of atmospheric Black Battle Metal at the end, alone is worth buying this whole CD for!!!) Sorry, no photos of naked women in the CD-booklet this time, just a
slick, colorful, & impressive digipak layout! *(Yes-- this IS Black Metal, too!)
Imported from France (on Evil Omen Records).

CAUSTIC
"Moments in the Infinite"
3 songs mini-CD (19 minutes total running time) of melodic Blackened Death surely inspired by Sweden's harmonic grind of the post-Grotesque/At The Gates scene. Close your eyes, & you'd swear this heavy & lyrical quintet from Denmark belonged on the "Ultimate Swedish - Slash & Burn Vol.1" compilati
on! Anyone who is a true fan of Dark Tranquility would enjoy this immensely (Dark Tranquility fans would be totally stupid to pass this up)! It's that atmospheric guitar power! The crystalline ring of acoustic guitar breaks! The heavy-duty brutality of the low vokills! The rocking, headbanging doominess & catchy thundering drums! An obscure, but cult gem not to be missed!
Imported from Belgium (on Shiver Records).

NOMICON/SARNATH
"The Me"/"Northodox" (split)
2 Death Metal bands from Finland. S
arnath present technical, highly-innovative doomy Death with very low brutal vocals & screeching blackened backing vocals; unique & original use of technical thrash structures, proficiently executed acoustic instrumentation trading off with raging, melodic grind, & impressive recording fidelity make this a worthwhile release.
Nomicon, like Sarnath, also present technical brutal Death (though not as dynamically or uniquely as Sarnath) with very low vokills & explosive blast-beats framed by progressive guitar leads & spiralling thrash grind.
Both bands complement each other on this release, making for a satisfying listen for fans of extreme music (who are fed up & tired of lifeless, sterile corporate "pop-metal" commercialism). Even though Sarnath's half of this split-CD was recorded in 1991, a favorable comparison to the greater harmonic Death scene of Sweden (At The Gates & beyond) can be made, & not far off the mark! This will soon prove to be an essential album! *(Look for Sarnath's latest album "Cosmopolitan"!)
Imported from Belgium (on Shiver Records).

Goddess of Desire
"Let Us Win This War"

Three spiked, studded, & fur-clad Black Metal warriors (from the Netherlands) plus Goddess of Desire Lilith (I don't know what she does in the band, but she does look really good!)-- could be the 90's BM version of early Carnivore, but they're musically better than what their appearance portrays (not that there's anything wrong with how they look- I dig 'em!): this is fucking GREAT total Celtic Frost/Hellhammer worship (it's those guitars, the riffs, & the T.Warrior vocalizations!) with an updated Nordic Metal & blackened Doom blend! Sounds appealing, huh? You bet, this is killer shit (1997) & you're sure to get hooked!
With titles like "Glory in Metal", "Metal to the Metals","Mistress of Inferno", "Wall of Terror" (Venom worship!), "Doomsday Warrior", etc. you know you're in for
a headbanger's celebration of all-out Old-School rockin' BM thrash!!!

CROWN OF THORNS
"The Burning"
The utterly stunning debut from Swedish Crown of Thorns hasn't lost its momentum, & continues to gain fans all over the world. "THE hardest band in Sweden!" -(from Black Sun records advertisement)
Crown of Thorns have made a name for themselves as being incredibly brutal, & this album presents classic, original post-At The
Gates style Swedish melodic/raging Death of blackened intensity & sheer anger! One of the best debut albums ever, a tour de force that will render you senseless!
Imported from Gothenburg, Sweden (on Black Sun Records).

Tha-Norr
"Wolfenzeitalter"
Ultra-Satanic, utterly blasphemic Black Metal from Germany-- like a very primitive Emperor! Basic BM darkness like early Burzum, Mayhem, & Darkthrone that maintains it's [early] Bathory-like purity even with some dynamic touches
from keyboards & 12-string guitar. Vokills sung in grim Northern-style screech add to the evil & extreme authenticity of lyrics (both English & German). This is highly recommended, don't under-estimate Tha-Norr (raging!), & certainly do not pass this up!
German Import (Nazgul's Eyrie Prod.)

Dark Reality
"Oh Precious Haze Pervade the Pain"
Newest album (1997) by Dark Reality from Oberndorf, now down to a quartet (a new member on vocals/guitar replacing 2 who were originally on the previous recordings). As stated on the cover: "11 entsückende Lieder und Stücke f&u
uml;r Gesang, Gitarren, Baß und allerdings Sclagzeugmaschine, teils mit alten Holzblasinstrumenten..."*
This is very classical Renaissance-oriented (re: J.S.Bach) & Germanic Folk music (I wont call this "Gothic Metal"), high quality arrangements presenting a definite improvement over their first album "Blossom of Mourning". With clear vocals singing in both German & English, this heady & enchanting release can be compared to Decoryah's work, &/or the latest Angizia album.
Imported from Switzerland (on General Inquisitor Torquemado's Releases/WitchHunt Records).

Ras Algethi
"Oneiricon - The White Hypnotic"
This Italian quintet's "Oneiricon - the White Hypnotic" presents over 57 minutes of dreamy, emotional (melancholic), avant-garde Doom Metal of both ambient & epic proportions. At times approaching early My Dying Bride's majestic pretensions, & at other times, etherial like Decoryah, this is highly atmospheric music that aspires to free the listener from gloomy oblivion to climb the heights of celestial jo
urneys. Well-recorded with clean, ringing guitar, pastoral keyboards, & thumping, though splashy drums; with clear impassioned male vocals.
Italian import (on Wounded Love/Avantgarde Music).

Countess
"Ad Maiorem Sathanae Gloriam"
Claiming to present "Orthodox Black Metal", Netherland's Countess (aka Orlok, with help from Opyros & Demonos Sova) are very imaginative & adept at bringing more than basic blackened screech & grind to the Black Metal crypt. With deep ritualistic ambience & majestic (keyboard-strong) doominess, the hateful, evil darkness is made
more complete & stifling. The simple black atmosphere of wicked guitar & grim gasping cries is made even more striking, with excellent recording production (especially the GREAT drum sound!) that project a totally stereophonic/multi-dimensional landscape!
An example of Countess' versatility: Song #3 "The Wrath of Satan's Whore" according to the liner-notes is "A tale of utter horror, dedicated to Erszebeth Nadasdy [Elizabeth Bathory] & inspired by a pilgrimage to her lair..."; this song is given a surprisingly tender treatment with folky acoustic-guitar calmly playing underneath a desperate storm of acrid, tortured screaming! *(As a bonus, St. Vitus' "Born Too Late" is covered, & given Countess' signature blackened arrangement!)
German import (on Nazgul's Eyrie Productions).

Abysmal
"The Pillorian Age"
Above-average, high-quality Norwegian Black Metal with great drumming & electrifying guitar-crunch (similar to Immortal's guitar sound on "Battles In the North"!); a majority of the music on this killer album consists of a grinding doomy approach that gives way to breakneck blasts of speed & searing melodic leads! There is much on Abysmal's "The Pillorian Age" that compares favorably to early Immortal in fact: brutal grim cries, a driving intensity, & a very dynamic dark atmosphere that avoids the stale mediocrity of lesser bands. A top-notch release from Avantgarde Music, Italy, but distributed by Nuclear Blast/EastWest.
German import.
