"When we finally managed to release 'The Just Law' by ALASTIS (HNF 001) in March '93 it was an important step for us. We printed 1000 copies on vinyl & we didn't make our money back. But it didn't matter, the point was to release an album & trying to establish the label. After that it took about 1 year before the next release was out, the now legendary 'Sorrow' EP by The 3rd And The Mortal! With that release we started a creative relationship with Voices of Wonder to strengthen the label itself & distribution. The goal with Head Not Found back then was the same as now: to release music with soul, not caring so much for muscial trends. By looking at the current roster of H.N.F. that is quite apparent.
"Many labels think that Head Not Found is solely a Black Metal label, but that is not really the whole truth! Sure we had the pleasure of working with the best bands in this genre (ULVER, GEHENNA, EMPEROR, etc.); H.N.F. is more than that. we can go from ugly Black Metal like HEMLOCK to the beautiful epic hymns of Forlorn & via the the far-out psychedelic masters FIG LEAF. We just love the music! Sure a band like FIG LEAF can never match ULVER in the sales department, but what the fuck, it's heavy music!!!!! So there you have the point of doing this sampler; we realize most people can not check out the complete H.N.F. catalog-- & thus this sampler! To show the world what we are all about! Angelic soprano vocals by ZILLA (who sounds like a thinner version of Theatre of Tragedy's Liv Christine), able to stay on key(!) with the doomy melodies. Zilla's hallucinogenic & ghostly vocals are reminiscent of Rose MacDowall's work with Church of Raism (& also with Death In June, Current 93, Boyd Rice, etc.)-- positively spine-tingling! Rich, guitar Grind similar to Thergothon or early Unholy are backed by violins, keyboards, & fronted by 2 male vocals (bass & tenor) for an amazing & fully DARK, dirge-y sound!
