A strong, surprisingly strong sophomore album from Hecate Enthroned that will amaze & captivate, since this is a fully dynamic release of epic & massive proportions. Destined to remain in Cradle of Filth's shadow (for now at least), comparisons are inevitable obviously because Hecate Enthroned consists of ex-members of CoF & the similarities of the vocals. In comparing the two bands, Hecate Enthroned is clearly the raw-sounding of the two; they just
don't have that major label slickness that CoF can produce, but in this case, rawness is a good thing-- a very good thing if the band wants to retain their extreme underground credibility (something that CoF has quickly lost). Maybe Hecate Enthroned aspire to the commercial heights of CoF, only they can say & only time will tell, but for now let them "pay their dues" as winning die-hard fans will help them achieve the loyalty & respect that will aid in longevity.
Back to the music: What is really surprising & ejoyable about this album is that the songs are highly listenable AND memorable; not just runaway, out-of-control speed & brutality. There IS dynamic (lots!); subtlety amongst the raging intensity. The neo-classical/dark-ambient intros/interludes are substantial (& satisfying) as opposed to disappearing as quick puffs of smoke.
This being Hecate Enthroned's second album, it is clear that the band is maturing, song-writing & arrangements are strengthening (the songs all sound different- hooray!), recording production values improving; things can only get better for this band as they have the most potential. While the drumming & vocals (the weakest elements here) have a ways to go to match the bands' collective imagination, the top-notch calibre of the keyboards-- their importance in fitting into the songs, how they govern the structure(s) of the songs, & the interplay or blending with the ripping guitar leads
/grind, is the single most important element that sets this band apart from being just another average BM-Thrash band. Killer British BM sound-- that taste we've grown to crave from Hecate Enthroned's "The Slaughter of Innocence..."!
