In 1996 many people of
the Black Metal underground-scene were shocked by a CD from the Norwegian
band Tulus, called "Pure Black Energy", which was released by the band
themselves. Soon this raw, energetic Black Metal album was re-released by
Hot Records (who also released the Dimmu Borgir MCD, Old Man's Child MCD,
Aura Noir MCD, etc.)...
Meanwhile several members of Tulus transformed into the live line-up of Old
Man's Child. In 1998 the follow-up called 'Mysterion' was released,
introducing Sarah Jezebel Deva of Cradle Of Filth fame on guest vocals...
but nonetheless, Tulus stuck to their unique style of intense, energetic
Black Metal, that either you love or hate.
1999 presents Tulus releasing their third album 'Evil 1999' with everything
matching perfectly-- production, songs, & image all combine into one big
thing: 'Evil 1999'. It's here, and it will exterminate the last year of the
millennium!!!

The title just about sums it up: "Pure Black E
nergy"-- hateful & raw Norwegian new-thrash Black Metal! Members from Old Mans Child & Minas Tirith (with Gottskalk on bass, Sarke on Drums, & Blodstrup on vocals/guitar-- these guys look like the Addams Family in Clive Barker's "Hellraiser"/"Hellbound"!)... According to Hot Records, "Tulus have created their own sound: dark, brutal, & very direct... Recordings for their debut album "Pure Black Energy" were done during 1996..."
Well, as points of reference, Tulus can compare to Fimbulwinter, Dimmu Borgir (harsher, though), Ildjarn-Nidhogg, & VON (as covered by Dark Funeral on their "Secrets of the Black Arts" album)-- NOT FOR WIMPS! This will clear your sinuses! We highly recommend this as this is true Norwegian rage & evil that shows how BM should be done right!!!

FIMBULWINTER
"Servants of Sorcery"
Fimbulwinter - The first release by Shagrath (Dimmu Borgir!) on his Hot Records label-- this is an important recorded document in the history of Nordic Black Metal since this album consists of Fimbulwinter's 1992 rehearsal demo. Featuring members who later went on to form Ulver, Dimmu Borgir, & Aura Noir, this recording presents a glimpse, albeit in a very raw & primitive form, of the evolution of Norwegian extreme metal. Very much inspired by the BM pioneers that came before *(Celtic Frost's "Morbid Tales" is covered here) & definitely along the mold of Darkthrone's "A Blaze In the Northern Sky" through to "Transilvanian Hunger"-- this is true BM thrash in its purest form!
