Debut album by this Swedish band of melodic Nordic Viking metal (influenced by Bathory, but also very similar to Einherjer & Enslaved). While the songs present clearly folk-influenced male choirs, ethereal & melodic female vocals, & acoustic instrumentation, Mithotyn are able to retain their distinctly Swedish melodic-thrash heaviness & atmospherics. Thorr's Hammer & runes adorning the cover are evidence of this band's attention to authentic Viking culture.
A very dynamic album overall, showing maturity & musically adept evolution from their past 3 demos ("Behold the Shields of Gold" from '93, "Promo 94", & "Nidhogg" from '95); grim Black Metal vocals blend with heroic male choir & female vocals, supported by touches of symphonic keyboards (similar to those on Enslaved "Hordanes Land"), flute, medieval melodies, etc. *(Mithotyn also appears with a great, stand-out track on the compilation cassette "A History of a Time to Come".)
