~ MAYHEM To Release Collection Of Covers, Re-Recordings ~
According to a posting on MAYHEM's web site, the Norwegian black metallers will most likely release a CD consisting of a few covers and re-recordings before the new studio album is out. "The covers will be SODOM, BLACK SABBATH as well as two more bands," the posting adds. "The re-recordings will be from 'Wolfs Lair Abyss' [1997]. It will also contain a track from the forthcoming album. The CD may also contain some sort of live CD-ROM track."

Regarding the new material, guitarist Blasphemer (a.k.a. Rune Erickson) said, "The new songs are tending towards a more aggressive and straight, in-your-face kinda expression. Expect 8-10 vicious and disharmonic songs of the purest of black metal. More info on when the band enters studio and which etc. later, but the album will most likely be recorded early 2006 for a late spring/early summer release. The album is still untitled."

MAYHEM's next live appearance wll take place on November 3 at the Elm St. Rock Café in Oslo, Norway. Following this show, MAYHEM will head over to Australia, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore. Exact cities and dates will be announced soon.

~ Chilean Black Metal Fans Linked To Series Of Violent Acts ~
A series of violent acts linked to satanic groups have been reported in different parts of Chile since the murder of the Father Faustino Gazziero on July 24, 2004 in the hands of a black metal fan. Just this past weekend, a new attack was reported in the general cemetery of Coyhaique, where several gravestones were defaced and even gunshots are said to have been fired by youths who appear to hold the same beliefs as those held by Rodrigo Orias, the 26-year-old DEICIDE fan responsible for Gazziero's murder.

Meanwhile, the authorities are currently considering a request by Orias to leave for a few days the psychiatric center in Putaendo, where he is currently undergoing treatment, to visit his mother, María Gallardo, who is said to be dying of cancer.

Orias' lawyer, Carmen Gloria Arroyo, issued an appeal last Friday for the authorities to allow her client for "humane reasons" to leave the psychiatric center and spend several days with his dying mother.

"Rodrigo's mother is in the final period of her life," the lawyer said. "She has cancer and our intention is to obtain permission so that can he can say good-bye of his mother. We are asking for the minimum possible time so that he can get on a plane, visit his mother and come back."

The following short interview with Orias' lawyer, Carmen Gloria Arroyo, was published on the Lun.com web site:

Q: What is Orias' condition a year after he committed the murder of the Father Faustino Gazziero?

A: "He has made excellent progress in his rehabilitation. He has reacted very well to the entire process, and he is able to socialize well with the other inmates. He is in a place with optimum conditions to aid him in his recovery."

Q: Is he aware of the crime that he has comitted?

A: "Absolutely. It is very clear he is seeking repentance for what he did. He understands that he committed a crime and that it was caused by his mental illness."

Q: Does he know that his favorite musical group, DEICIDE, is scheduled to arrive in Chile today?

A: "He is worried about the connection that is being made between what he has done and this group. He wants to make it clear that what he did has nothing to do with his musical taste."

~ DEICIDE: More Details Emerge About Chilean Concert Arrests ~
15 people were arrested for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct following DEICIDE's live debut in Chile, which took place Friday (July 15) at Gimnasio Nataniel in Santiago. According to El Sol de Mexico, police in Santiago, Chile arrested 15 people who tried to enter by force the venue where American death metal band DEICIDE were performing their first-ever concert in the country.

The arrests were reportedly made on Friday (July 15) after the organizers of the event closed the doors of the packed Gymnasium Nataniel, causing nearly two hundred fans to be turned away when they tried to enter the concert.

Many of the fans standing outside, according to an official report, were found to be either drunk or on drugs, and they began to throw empty bottles at the walls of the Gymnasium Nataniel as well as at the vehicles that were parked around the venue.

Around 80 Special Forces police officers responded to the disturbance and used various means, including tear gas, to disperse the unruly crowd. In the meantime, 3,500 people reportedly enjoyed the presentation of DEICIDE, whose members were said to be unaware of the chaos that was taking place outside the building.

DEICIDE's concert in Chile went ahead despite objections from local church officials, who had asked the authorities to prevent the group from playing in country out of respect for an Italian Catholic priest who was murdered by a DEICIDE fan almost a year ago.

~ PILEDRIVER: New Demo Tracks Available For Download ~
Reunited classic Canadian metallers PILEDRIVER have uploaded full-length MP3 files of four new demo tracks from their upcoming album, "Metal Manifesto", at:

http://www.sofa-q.com/demos.html .

According to the Internet heavy metal encyclopedia BNR, PILEDRIVER burst onto the metal scene in 1985 "with an over-the-top image (including a ridiculous album cover), tacky lyrics ('Sex With Satan', 'Alien Rape', etc), but also a surprisingly well-executed power/thrash style. [The group's debut] 'Metal Inquisition' was just plain great fun to listen to, one of those guilty pleasures that one could both smile at and headbang to at the same time. Some time later, the follow-up, 'Stay Ugly', appeared, and was quite a disappointment, as the production and songwriting were both below average, and the style had shifted a bit toward messy thrash. Soon after that, the band, disappeared without a trace.

"Years later, the PILEDRIVER story is told. Pile Driver himself (real name Gord Kirchin) tells how the idea of the band came from a record exec who basically just wanted to make a quick buck. The band, as such, never really existed at all, as Kirchin was only hired to do vocals for two separate studio projects (which explains why the two albums differed as much as they did), with all the names made up, as was virtually everything else about the band. Kirchin later formed his own band, DOGS WITH JOBS, and sporadically has been working on solo material since then."

~ DARKANE Guitarist Mixing NON-HUMAN LEVEL Solo Album ~
DARKANE guitarist Christofer Malmström has posted the following message on his official web site:

"Finally the new DARKANE album, 'Layers of Lies', has been released worldwide (except for Japan who will get it in September for some reason I don't know, but it sure is the first time it happens). The album has gotten tons of great reviews which makes us all in DARKANE very happy and proud! Now we are negoctiating with different tour offers, and we hope to be able to put up a tour plan for the autumn quite soon. One show that has been confirmed now is in Herning, Denmark September 24th. We are looking forward to finally get up on stage again and try out some of the new material!

"The recording of my solo album, NON-HUMAN LEVEL, is finally coming to an end. Right now Peter [Wildoer; DARKANE drummer/NON-HUMAN LEVEL vocalist] and I are mixing the album and we are hoping to be finished before July is over. Everything is recorded and the last thing we did was the vocals. Peter has an amazingly brutal voice... sounding somewhere between the late Chuck from DEATH to Tomas Lindberg from AT THE GATES. I'm very proud of what we have come up with on this album and Gustaf, Ryan and Peter has done some incredible contributions, and I can't wait to release it! The plan is to release it around October by Listenable Records. Stay tuned

~ LEAVES' EYES Frontwoman Working On New Solo Album ~
After reaching successful positions with LEAVES' EYES in the German charts, former THEATRE OF TRAGEDY frontwoman Liv Kristine is busy producing her second solo album. The much-anticipated follow-up to 1998's "Deus ex Machina" will be entitled "Enter my Religion" and will be released on Roadrunner Records.

Commented Liv: "The recordings are going very well. We have produced so many new songs that it will be hard to make a desicion concerning the final album tracks. The songs are very diverse — you will hear soft ballads, cadanced pop songs and also rocking tracks. It's all so ineteresting for me as we are working with some very exotic instruments. This is a new challenge for me as an artist because I can realize so many new ideas I've been dreaming of for a long time."

~ PETER TÄGTGREN Talks About Producing New CELTIC FROST Album ~
Denmark's Antenna webzine recently conducted an interview with Swedish producer/musician Peter Tägtgren (HYPOCRISY, PAIN). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Antenna: Some magazines have referred to you as a workaholic, and it seems to be the truth, but is that the real picture of the one and only Peter Tägtgren?

Peter Tägtgren: "In the past years it's been crazy, that's true. With many tours and much recordings, all the shit. It's been very hectic, but I think I'll have to take a vacation. The only thing I have scheduled from September and on is the cover album from PAIN and make a new PAIN album."

Antenna: Not only did you take a voluntary break from HYPOCRISY, by splitting up the band for a short period of time, but you also took a lengthy break from the producer routines. Leaving behind some things feel good?

Peter Tägtgren: "Yes, my job as a producer had begun to feel like a drive-thru at McDonalds, and I didn't feel like doing much too much as a producer anymore. Nowadays I have just finished the new DESTRUCTION album, and I'm going to co-produce the new CELTIC FROST album."
Antenna: Expectations towards the latter albums are gigantic, hence producing much focus and consequently expectations towards your name as well.

Peter Tägtgren: "I definitely have to do it according to the band's wishes and return to the sound of the old days, the sound of 'To Mega Therion' and 'Into the Pandemonium'."

Antenna: And this comeback will most likely produce two fronts; one who complaints that the new album sounds just like the old album, hence no progression or a rip-off of the good, old albums, and another front who complaints that the new album doesn't sound anything like the good, old albums. Comments?

Peter Tägtgren: "Yes, you can never satisfy everyone. I'm just trying to satisfy myself, and the band. I'm going to reflect on how to do it and follow my heart. I'm the co-producer, so I'm in charge of the sound and stuff like that. I can't do anything about the songs, but I can do something with the sound."

~ CHTON Announce New Drummer ~
CHTON, the Norwegian death metal band featuring Kenneth of KEEP OF KALESSIN and Torstein of MANES, have announced the addition of drummer Vegar "Vyl" Larsen (KEEP OF KALESSIN) to the group's ranks. "He is now our permanent drummer, and has already contributed to the songwriting process," the band write on their web site.

"For those of you who saw us in Bergen, Oslo, Kristiansand or Trondheim in 2004, [you] may be familiar with his skills, since he filled in for Vidar all through last autumn...

"We have two songs done already plus lots of loose riffs and parts, and we feel it'll be our strongest material ever! Dark, brutal and totally Chtonian death fucking metal!!!

"On a different note; we signed to Retribute Records for only one album, and we've chosen not to resign with them for our next album. Our plan is to have material for a full new album ready by late autumn 2005 and we're currently on the look-out for a label daring enough to release it..."

CHTON's debut album, "Chtonian Lifecode", was recorded, mixed and mastered at Godt Selskap Studio between April and June 2004 and was released last August through Retribute Records. The album includes guest vocals by Attila Csihar (MAYHEM, ex-TORMENTOR) and Frediablo (NECROPHAGIA, GRIMFIST).

CHTON's next live appearance will take place on Saturday, July 23 at the Fosen Rock festival in Bjugn, Norway. Also scheduled to perform are GRIFFIN and TRIOSPHERE, among others.

~ KING DIAMOND Plans MERCYFUL FATE Retrospective DVD ~
Metal-Rules.com recently conducted an in-depth interview with King Diamond. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Metal-Rules.com: Were you happy with how the bonus DVD that came with "The Puppet Master" turned out?

King Diamond: "Absolutely. Of course it's a low-budget thing but I think it was a very good companion to the story. It was different for the fans to see me sit down and tell a version of the story that just came directly from my brain. I didn't have any notes or anything, it was just straight from my memory. It was actually done in my home and with just one camera, but I told the story three times. So they shot it from one camera angle, then another one and another one and edited that together. To get that extra thing for free, I think a lot of fans valued that as an extra gift. I actually got sucked into it, which was weird because I know exactly how it was done. I was there, but I got sucked into it and paid attention when I listened to it. I finally got the accepted version in Phoenix on a Saturday morning by eleven. It was sunshine outside and I sat and watched it on my DVD in my living room and I got sucked in then. When it was over I felt like, 'Oh, wow, that was weird. What am I getting freak out about?' I got caught up in the way I presented it. I don't think I've heard any bad things about it. There might be a perfectionist out there going, 'Hey, that should have been another necklace in the background (laughs).' This was a good idea from [Metal Blade Records president] Brian Slagel originally because I told him the story in my living room when he was here for a business meeting. 'Hey, you want to hear the new story?' and then I told it, just like I did there, right off my memory. It was another bright sunny day and he was all like, 'Wow, maybe you can record this as a bonus track at the end of the disc where you tell the story like this or better yet maybe we can shoot it on DVD?' I thought it sounded pretty nice as a little extra thing to put in."

Metal-Rules.com: So what can we expect from KING DIAMOND in 2005, is there going to be a new album or a live DVD?

King Diamond: "Once we're past the release of the live album, me and Andy [LaRocque, guitar] will start writing material for the next album. At the same time, I have to look at a lot of DVD stuff, old bootleg stuff. We want to see if we can put together a retro MERCYFUL FATE DVD and a retro KING DIAMOND DVD to give the fans some of the very early stuff that we were involved with. I'm talking about bootlegs that no one has ever seen before. We do have copies of every bootleg that has been available, but we have masters of bootlegs that no one has ever seen. It's that stuff that I would like to get out to the fans, so even collectors will be blown away. Very good picture quality, very good bootleg sound quality on all instruments. An example would be MERCYFUL FATE in early 1982, before Michael Denner joined the band, playing a live concert in Copenhagen. When I saw it the first time, I was a little stunned. 'Oh my God, that's not Michael Denner there!' We have even more stuff of KING DIAMOND. I received 35 tapes a few weeks ago where the majority is stuff that people have seen before, the collectors you know…that is not interesting for me at all. But there's MERCYFUL FATE live in 1983 in a converted church that had become a concert venue in Amsterdam, Holland. The venue was called the Paradiso. We were playing 'Don't Break the Oath' songs before we recorded 'Don't Break the Oath' and were burning the cross on stage and all that stuff. It's cool and has very good quality. You probably won't have seen any bootleg quality that good, both picture and sound. It is really interesting. If I were a fan, say it was SABBATH and I could get some of that stuff, I would be right there, I would love it. In the end, the fans decide themselves what they will buy and not buy. It will be clearly labeled what it is, never-before-available official bootlegs. We hope to get through that, I have to have another meeting with Brian and when I've been through all of it and found the very best stuff, we have to see how he wants to approach the whole thing. Of course, we will throw all the official videos on that. Then we will do a second leg of 'The Puppet Master' tour in the U.S., in places where we haven't played before and revisiting some others, then a European leg of the same tour. When that is done, it will be late in the year and we will be getting ready for the next release, so we're pretty busy up until Christmas."

~ NEUROSIS' SCOTT KELLY Launches CombatMusicRadio.com; PHILIP ANSELMO To Contribute ~
Scott Kelly, a founding member of psychedelic hardcore band NEUROSIS, and Christopher Moeschl together have founded and launched Combatmusicradio.com, a new web site born of a passion for heavy music and blood sports.

The first offering from CombatMusicRadio.com (KMBT) is a weekly pre-recorded radio show called "The Show", hosted by Kelly, focusing on past and present underground metal, punk, and noise, and news and interviews pertaining to blood sports. "The Show", in addition to streaming, is available as a weekly podcast. The site also features written columns about music and blood sports.

"The goal of CombatMusicRadio.com is to create a platform where we can bring these two worlds together," said Kelly.

A "Reviews" column deals exclusively with music-related items such as record reviews and live reviews, while the "Blood Sports" section offers news and reviews of events and athletes. Eugene Robinson, a practicing fighter who has been involved in the fight game for a number of years and has previously written for Grappling magazine, pens the "Damage Ink" monthly column, focusing on NHB, mixed martial arts, and street fighting. SUPERJOINT RITUAL vocalist Philip Anselmo, an encyclopedia of boxing knowledge, is covering the sport for the site.

"Our ultimate goal with KMBT radio is too be streaming audio 24/7," said Kelly. "We will also be looking for people who would like to contribute their own work to our programming."

~ PANTERA's Collaboration With DAVID ALLAN COE To See Light Of Day ~
REBEL MEETS REBEL, the collaboration between former PANTERA members Vinnie Paul, Dimebag Darrell, and Rex Brown and country/western outlaw musician David Allan Coe, will finally see the light of day during the coming months. Coe wrote all the songs with Dimebag back in 2000, a few years before the guitarist was murdered onstage last December.

"His brother [Vinnie Paul] is tryin' to get that together," Coe told RollingStone.com. "That's gonna be a great thing."

Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "Heartworn Highway", "A Man With Nothin' Ain't Got Nothin' to Lose", "One Night Stand", "New York City Streets" and "Get Outta My Life". The title track, "Rebel Meets Rebel", was previously said to be a duet with PANTERA singer Philip Anselmo.

"Being from Texas, not only do we have rock roots, but we listen to country and blues," Paul explained to MTV News in early 2000. "Before our shows, we'd play 'Jack Daniels, If You Please' off of one of [Coe's] CDs.... He caught wind of it, and we went out to see him when he played Billy Bob's. He was just a super cool dude. It was fun to check him out, and we hooked him up with a couple of our home videos, and he called us back a couple days later and just said, 'Man, these f***ing videos are incredible. I really dig what you guys do.' He knows more about PANTERA than I do now."

The fast friendship soon yielded a creative partnership, as Paul explained. "We started hooking up and jamming and doing some tunes, and they're pretty unique. Some of them are just like an up-tempo thrash metal hoedown with a country and western singer," the drummer said.

PANTERA's career overview CD, "The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys' Vulgar Hits!", sold 406,000 in the United States since its September 2003 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The 16-song "Vulgar Hits!" CD was packaged with a bonus DVD boasting 12 videos, including two live performances. The bulk of the material was culled from the band's six major-label releases, but also included are non-album cuts "Cat Scratch Fever" (a cover of the TED NUGENT song that originally appeared on the Polygram soundtrack to "Detroit Rock City") and the BLACK SABBATH cover "Hole in the Sky", previously available only on import.
