In the face of death

Ten years ago, Norway was rocked by a brutal murder and a string of arson attacks linked to the Black Metal band Mayhem. Now, on tour with the group, Chris Campion asks what really happened - and finds that even the darkest Satanists have a human side

Backstage after the first show of a whistle-stop winter tour of Norway, Necro Butcher, bassist with Norwegian Black Metal band Mayhem, is already a bit tipsy. He is gleefully reading back his own words from an article about the band in the local newspaper. 'I promise not to throw animal heads at the audience in Bergen,' he preens.
The last time the band played in the city, a sheep's head thrown from the stage smashed into the skull of an audience member. 'He wasn't watching the band,' shrugs Necro Butcher. 'He was talking to a girl,' he says, implying that the man should have known better. Animal heads speared on microphone stands are de rigueur for a Mayhem show. 'We usually use pigs' heads but we couldn't get one that night. We like to throw them to the audience at the end of the show so they can, y'know, play around with them.'

He returns his attention to the double page spread, holding it aloft with outstretched arms. 'Fuckin' excellent!' he slurs. 'This 'is the first positive article ever written about Mayhem in Norway.'

To put that in context, the band have been around for more than 20 years. Their peers acknowledge them as the originators of Norwegian Black Metal (often referred to as its country's biggest cultural export), defining both its antagonistic sound and attitude. Black Metal relishes its position as the most extreme form of music imaginable.

In the early Nineties, a spate of church burnings and three grisly deaths stoked blazing headlines that described the nihilistic rampage of the satanically-minded youth. The limits of tolerance in this largely secular society were sorely tested by sensational stories centred not on the music's fans but the bands themselves. And, as far as the Norwegian media are concerned, when it comes to Black Metal all roads lead to Mayhem, whose terrible and bloody history eclipses the debauchery of even the most hardened rock bands.

Before Mayhem had even released their first studio album in 1993, a creepy masterpiece called De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, singer Dead had committed suicide and founding guitarist Euronymous had been brutally murdered by session bassist Count Grishnackh (with second guitarist, Snorre Ruch from THORNS, acting as his accomplice). Grishnackh was already suspected of initiating the church burnings that began in 1992.

'We couldn't really buy better publicity,' Necro Butcher acknowledges sagely. 'But every time we lost a member we had to find somebody else to replace them and start the whole rehearsing process again. We suffered in that way as a band.'

Gnomic and gnome-like (the band's road crew affectionately refer to him as 'Micro Butcher'), Mayhem's 36-year old bassist is in some ways Norway's answer to Lemmy; a stoic veteran who has helped steer the band he co-founded in 1984 through personal tragedy and public vilification.

Drummer Hellhammer is the next longest-standing member of Mayhem. He's also the quietest. A compact figure with darkly handsome (but distinctly un-Scandinavian) features which are immaculately groomed, he always seems to be at the centre of his own party backstage. 'He may look quiet,' says one member of the crew, 'but he's the most twisted of the lot.'

Euronymous's replacement is a tightly wired guitarist by the name of Blasphemer (AURA NOIR). With his long, dyed black hair and a tuft of beard that curls underneath his chin which he is for ever absent-mindedly stroking, he looks like a Black Metal dandy. He also has a rapier wit and a refined taste for red wine, amphetamines and sweet revenge.

One hapless journalist who had the knives out for Mayhem every time they played Bergen found this out the hard way. 'One time he made some personal comments about myself and Hellhammer,' says the guitarist, 'so after the show, we drove to a slaughterhouse, picked up a pig's head and dropped it off at his house with a dagger stuck between its eyes. 'We never heard from him again,' he says, pursing his lips with pleasure.

Despite the tour schedule - four dates in four days, requiring them to cover more than 1,200 miles of treacherous mountain road up and down the country in a cramped 16-seater mini-van - spirits in the band are high. It's the first time they have toured with TORMENTOR's Hungarian singer Attila Csihar (his real name), a surprisingly mellow guy who comes across like a stoned Bela Lugosi. Recruited after Dead's suicide to record vocals for the Dom Mysteriis album, Attila lent his own touch of madness to the project with a possessed vocal style that swings from the operatic to a bestial growl. At its grotesque best, his singing sounds like vomit. Attila's initial tenure with the band was cut short by Euronymous's death.

Another frontman, called Maniac, left the band in 2004 through mutual consent. But not before Blasphemer had made his displeasure known, at what he felt was Maniac's lack of commitment, by kicking him down a flight of stairs as they came off stage - and twice slamming his head facefirst into a wall. 'Blasphemer actually came and asked my permission beforehand,' an amused Necro Butcher confides. 'Maniac had terrible stage fright. He'd get so drunk beforehand that he couldn't remember the words.' Perhaps not surprisingly, that was his last show.

In the insular world of Norwegian metal, Attila's return to Mayhem is a major event. The Bergen show has brought some local heavyweights out to see the band. They include a bellowing man mountain called Abbath, guitarist with Black Metal stalwarts Immortal, and Gaahl, 28-year old vocalist with Gorgoroth, a tall, thin fellow with piercing eyes and a wizard-like beard tightly plaited at its tail.

Although exceedingly polite and softspoken, Gaahl has a history of arrests for violence that would make any gangsta rapper blush with shame. He's currently awaiting sentencing on charges of torture and committing ritual acts. It is alleged he beat his victim - a man who had turned up uninvited and inebriated to an after-hours party at his house - threatened to sacrifice him and gave him a cup into which to bleed. Acting as his own defence, Gaahl claimed in court that he had been attacked first and his assailant was only provided with a cup 'so that he wouldn't make such a mess in my house'. The singer refuses to discuss his version of events in detail now for fear of prejudicing the outcome of the trial, but insists he was attacked as part of a hit organised by a man with whom he had a prior dispute.

The use of violence, according to Gaahl, is only necessary when people cross his clearly defined borders. 'Everything deals with respect. The way I think of it is that you have to punish ... or teach,' he corrects himself, 'anyone that crosses your borders so that they won't do it again.'

Gaahl's ethical code derives from Odinism, the pagan religion of the Vikings that predates Christianity in Norway and is also the occult philosophy that underpins Black Metal. Many in the scene have adopted or adapted names from Norse mythology.

'Black Metal was never meant to reach an audience,' Gaahl says. 'It was purely for our own satisfaction. Something entirely selfcentred. The shared goal was to become the true Satan; the elite human, basically. The elite are above rules. So people did what they wanted to do. And they had a common enemy which was, of course, Christianity, socialism and everything that democracy stands for, especially this idea that every man is alike and equal to his neighbour. That, of course, is a fake.'

Gaahl's extremist outlook is undoubtedly influenced by his surroundings. He lives on a farm three hours outside of Bergen, isolated from the mass of humanity. 'My family owns three mountains,' he says. 'There's not much else around there. Love of nature is a big part of Black Metal. It's easy to feel isolated in nature. And solitude and distance from everyone else is very important to us.'

As Mayhem's tour bus winds through plateaus and fjords for hundreds of miles on its way from Bergen (a western port town) to Kristiansand in the south, it's easy to see what he means. Norway is a country in which nature has the upper hand. At times blizzards make it impossible to see more than a couple of metres in front of the van. When the skies clear, the awesome landscape communicates its majesty through an eerie silence. Trees laden with snow are contorted into obsequious poses, as if compelled to bow down by forces beyond their control. And with the onset of dusk, the craggy profiles of the black mountains take on a malefic aspect, casting a dark shadow across the land.

This epic geography bleeds unabated into the harsh, cold and unforgiving mood of Black Metal. It's hard to think of a music that sounds more appropriate to the environment from which it emerged. Its chief characteristic is a chilling vibrato guitar style developed by Mayhem's Euronymous and Snorre Ruch that provides an oddly harmonious counterpoint to the stark brutality of the rhythm section.

Fenriz, the anaemic-looking drummer and lyricist for Darkthrone, has a wealth of opinions about what constitutes the true Norwegian Black Metal sound. A self-deprecating music geek whose arms are covered with intentionally bad heavy metal tattoos, Fenriz can sometimes be found, beer and fag [cigarette] in hand, lodged behind a table at Oslo's Elm Street Cafe, a drinking den popular with metal musicians.

He is obsessed with maintaining the rawness and purity of early Black Metal. To that end, he is endlessly compiling mixtapes that seek to define its influences. The first was released on CD through British label Peaceville as Fenriz Presents ... The Best Of Old School Black Metal.

'There wasn't a generic sound back then,' he explains. 'We had to decide ourselves what we deemed worthy of the Black Metal stamp. There were many "Thrash" releases with a lot of "Black" in them, whereas others had no "Black" at all. This is not maths, so I can't say one plus one equals 30. It had something to do with production, lyrics, the way they dressed and a commitment to making ugly, raw, grim stuff.

'I started out with a simple kit: just one snare, a floor tom and a couple of cymbals. But then, I've been pushing the envelope for years. I work in the post office,' he deadpans. Despite having an extensive back catalogue - 'We're currently working on our "difficult" 13th album,' he says - and selling several thousand copies of each new release, Fenriz, like many of Black Metal's leading lights, still holds down a regular job. (When he's not touring or recording with Mayhem, Hellhammer also works; as a night watchman in a mental hospital.)

'Before the whole Black Metal thing blew up in 93/94, it was all very DIY,' says Fenriz, who decries the watered-down approach ofcommercial Black Metal. 'After that you could just call up [German metal label] Nuclear Blast and get a deal. It was very underground before then. We could walk the streets looking like insane motherfuckers and no-one knew what the hell was going on. We just looked like freaks. But then the media got hold of it and suddenly everyone knew what we'd been up to ... unfortunately.' He laughs.

The event that brought black to the world occurred on Saturday, 6 June 1992. On that day, the Fantoft Stave Church near Bergen, a magnificent 12th-century gothic structure made of wood and acknowledged as a historical landmark, was razed. Lightning strikes and electrical failures rather than foul play were thought to be the chief suspects. But in January 1993 Varg Vikernes, aka Count Grishnackh, summoned a journalist from a local paper, Bergens Tidendes, to a loft apartment decorated with 'Nazi paraphernalia, weapons and Satanic symbols'. The windows were blacked out with carpet. Vikernes gave a gloating interview in which he claimed that the Black Metal scene, having effectively declared war on Christianity and Norwegian society, was responsible for some eight church burnings so far and intended to continue its campaign of terror.

No physical evidence ever emerged to connect Vikernes to the crime, but he brazenly used a photo of the church's charred remains to promote Askes (Norwegian for 'ashes'), an album by his solo recording project, Burzum. Despite repeatedly denying his involvement, he is widely believed to have taken the photo himself.

In one fell swoop, he also brought the full force of the Norwegian authorities down on the Black Metal scene. Mayhem, their associates, and members of other bands were rounded up and arrested for questioning. A special police intelligence unit was set up to investigate criminal happenings within the scene.

'The threat was that we were organising a lot of loonies with this type of music,' says Necro Butcher. 'You could also say that the church burnings were a sort of attack on homeland security. I was against the church burning and so was Hellhammer.'

Nevertheless, Necro Butcher was initially blamed for two of the attacks by police. 'Soon after, I met this chick at a party and ended up taking her back to my place,' he recalls. 'The next morning, she told me that she'd burnt those churches. I said, "That's good because I was framed for your crime but it was nice to meet you anyway. And nice to fuck you too!" She was a Black Metal girl. Now she's a Nazi girl. She was the daughter of another loony. Her mother was involved in one of those women's groups that storms into stores and throws out the pornos. So you can see the type of insanity that was around.'

Once the spotlight was cast on the scene, it never left. Necro Butcher's family farm outside Oslo was raided just three years ago. Police discovered a stash of weed and an assault rifle fitted with a sniper's scope and a silencer. When asked why he had it, he grins, 'Boys like their toys, y'know. I've always collected any kind of weapon that came my way.'

A further search of the farm revealed a hoard of hand grenades and tear gas canisters. 'My grandfather and uncle stole them from the army,' he claims. 'But the police tried to pin that on me also. They wanted to throw the book at me.' He ended up serving a year in prison.

'The secret police actually called me up three months ago,' he continues. 'They said, we want to have a talk with you. But they didn't really have anything to say. I think they just wanted to check up on me.' The stakes were never so high back in the early days, when Necro Butcher says that the impetus to form Mayhem was 'just a stupid boy fantasy'. He and Euronymous met in 1983, They lived in the same Oslo suburb and bonded over their shared love of Motorhead and Venom (a Satanic-themed group from Newcastle with a punk-metal sound who coined the term 'Black Metal' in 1982).

'We just decided immediately that we were going to start a band. But it was always a cat and dog thing between me and Oystein,' he says, referring to Euronymous by his familiar, first name. 'We had one similar interest - the band - but everything else was different. While I was out raising hell with all my drug friends, he was home writing letters. He was the quiet type with all the strange friends, listening to Brian Eno and all this "bing, bong, bing bong" music. I didn't have time to fuck around with all of that.'

Ever-shifting line-ups meant that Mayhem rarely played live. Instead they recorded cassette demos, which they traded with other bands and sold by mail order through fanzines. 'That's how we corresponded with our audience,' says Necro Butcher. 'It was the way of the times. This type of music didn't have a stage to play on. So we got it out by dividing the world between us. I had Australia and America. Oystein had everything that was obscure, like Russia and China.'

As well as being an ardent music fan, Euronymous was an enthusiastic adherent of communism and was once a member of a local Marxist-Leninist youth organisation; adirection that created an uneasy tension with his band-mates.

'Any correspondence with Euronymous quickly escalated into very long letters,' says BÂrd Eithin, former drummer with another early Black Metal band called Emperor. Eithin was just 13 years old and living in almost cultural isolation in a town of 500 people, 400 miles from Oslo, when he first became pen-pals with Euronymous in 1987. 'He was very enthusiastic about the idea of releasing music to people in countries that otherwise wouldn't have the ability to hear it, especially in the East.'

The letter-writing also brought Mayhem into contact with Dead, a Swede who joined Mayhem when his band Morbid folded in 1988. Serious illness as a child and a near death experience convinced him that he had died and was now a being from another world. His beliefs are preserved in the vampiric lyrics he wrote for De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. Dead reputedly carried around the carcass of a crow in a jar and would inhale fumes from it before taking the stage so he could perform with the stench of death in his nostrils. He also took to donning a white greasepaint visage, designed to mimic the pallor of 13th-century plague victims.

'It wasn't anything to do with the way Kiss and Alice Cooper used make-up,' says Necro Butcher. 'Dead actually wanted to look like a corpse. He didn't do it to look cool. He would draw snot dripping out of his nose. That doesn't look cool. He called it corpse-paint.

'When Dead first arrived in Norway, Necro Butcher took it upon himself to make sure their new singer had somewhere to live and was looked after. Euronymous, on the other hand, apparently did his best to make him feel uncomfortable. 'He tried to psych him out,' says Necro Butcher. 'He would tell Dead, "We don't like you. You should just kill yourself." Stuff like that.'

And then, one day in the spring of 1991, Dead did just that. Euronymous came back to their house to discover his body slumped against a wall. He had slashed his wrists with a butcher's knife and blown his brains out with a shotgun. His suicide note had a morbid humour . It read, 'Excuse all the blood. Let the party begin.' For reasons best known to himself, Euronymous took pictures of Dead's remains before notifying the police.

'Oystein called me up the next day,' recalls Necro Butcher, 'and says, "Dead has done something really cool! He killed himself." I thought, have you lost it? What do you mean cool? He says, "Relax, I have photos of everything." I was in shock and grief. He was just thinking how to exploit it. So I told him, "OK. Don't even fucking call me before you destroy those pictures."'

Several years later a lurid photo of Dead, lying in a shabby room in which the only splash of colour was provided by his blood, somehow found its way onto the cover of a Mayhem bootleg produced in South America. By resigning as bassist of Mayhem, Necro Butcher fatefully left his position open for Varg Vikernes, Euronymous's eventual killer, to enter the picture.

'In retrospect,' Butcher muses. 'I think Oystein was shocked by Dead's suicide. And taking the photograph was the only way he could cope with it, like, "if I have to see this, then everybody else has to see it too".'

'Afterwards, there was a change in mentality,' says BÂrd Eithin, who believes that Dead's suicide marked the point at which, under Euronymous's direction, the Black Metal scene began its obsession with all things satanic and evil. Two months later, Euronymous moved to Oslo. He opened a shop called Helvete ('Hell'), from which he also ran his own label, Deathlike Silence Productions. The walls of the shop were painted black and hung with medieval weapons, pictures discs and band posters. In the window was a tombstone crafted from polystyrene. Euronymous began to create a persona as the embodiment of an ancient evil. Promo photos from the time show him dressed in a black cloak holding a rapier. The corpse-paint has become more stylised; his gaze, distant and remote. He looks like a character from a German expressionist movie.

'I think it was then that Euronymous discovered he had the power to influence people in any way he wanted,' says Eithin, who worked in the store for the year that it was open for business and lived in an apartment at the back. 'If you have a group of people like that who are very close, they start to create their own rules, their own morals and, at the end of the day, end up with a twisted philosophy built on hatred and frustration towards the rest of society. It's the archetypal way to create mass psychosis. A lot of people say it must have been the desire to rebel against Christianity and conformity in Norway. But I think it was just coincidence, people meeting each other at the right or wrong time.'

The catalyst was the introduction of Varg Vikernes into the mix of characters. 'No one knew who he was when he first came to Helvete,' Eithin says. 'He came out of nowhere, this serious-looking guy from Bergen who doesn't drink alcohol but milk. He would always be drinking from cartons of milk whereas a lot of the others were almost alcoholics. It was a party scene. And he stood out from the crowd.' (Butcher claims that Euronymous was also not much of a drinker until he moved to Oslo: 'At the age 24, he discovered that beer was actually pretty good.')

Euronymous took Vikernes, who was five years younger than him, under his wing: inviting him to play bass with Mayhem and offering to release his music as Burzum. 'Vikernes was a very productive guy and also very enthusiastic like Euronymous,' says Eithin. 'He was able to record two albums a year while Euronymous was struggling to finish his first full album with Mayhem.'

Predictably, their friendship turned to rivalry. The newspaper interview in which Vikernes took credit for the burning of the Fantoft church gave him extra kudos in his struggle for position as leader of the scene. 'It's sounds really silly,' Eithin says, but I think there was a little bit of a contest between them to see who could be more evil. It created a very difficult situation, especially for Euronymous, who wanted the glamour and the showbiz. With him, there was a lot of smoke but not so much fire.'

But it was Eithin who raised the stakes for transgressive behaviour. In August 1992, while visiting his parents in Lillehammer, he killed a man who had propositioned him in the Winter Olympic Park, stabbing him 37 times with a pocket knife. The body was discovered the next day. Eithin was not caught for a year, despite his guilt being an open secret within the crowd at Helvete; no doubt, this contributed to the feeling that they were now able to do anything with impunity.

'The destructive side of the scene encouraged the criminal happenings,' says Eithin, who served eight years in prison for the killing. 'It became very difficult for Euronymous. I think he felt he had to prove that he could be a part of it and not just in the background.' Euronymous reacted to the insecurity he felt about his position in the scene by resorting to the tactics he had used on Dead. 'Oystein was always sending death threats to people,' says Necro Butcher. 'It was his reaction to everything. But he didn't put so much into it. And then when he met you, he was like, "OK. You're cool!". Then you were best friends. So when eventually he got to be unfriendly with Varg, he threatened him like he did everyone else. Oystein told him, "I'm going to send some people to torture you. Until you die." But Varg Vikernes saw this as a real threat. He probably thought, "better him than me. I'll just go down and do him".'

Although this last statement is purely speculation by Butcher, it tallies with Vikernes's claims that he killed Euronymous in self-defence. Euronymous was in his underwear when he answered the door to Vikernes at his Oslo apartment at 4am on 10 August 1993. In the melee, Vikernes chased Euronymous through the stairwell stabbing him 24 times in the chest, back and head.

Again the police arrested Vikernes and he was charged in September following a confession by his accomplice, Snorre Ruch. The darkly charismatic and articulate Vikernes commanded the front pages during his spring 1994 trial for murder, arson and possession of illegal weapons (police found 150 kilos of explosives at his home). 'The Count', as he was known, quickly became Norway's answer to Charles Manson.

Sentenced to 21 years in prison, the maximum term under Norwegian law, Vikernes soon renounced Black Metal and embraced his own heathen neo-Nazi philosophy. Recent photos show him sporting a blond Hitler haircut. In November 2003, just six months before he was due to be released, he absconded during weekend leave. Police arrested him two days later in Oslo.

'I think that as events rolled on, it became evident that people wanted it to go as far as possible,' says Eithin, who now works as a driver for a recycling company. 'It was hopeless for everyone as the crimes carried on. We all realised it had to end sometime. It was probably a good thing that a lot of us were taken out of the scene when we were.'

Mayhem, though, refused to bow to destiny. 'Me and Hellhammer got together at Oystein's funeral and decided to carry on with the band,' says Necro Butcher. Their first order of business was to release the almost-completed De Mysteriis album.

'Because Vikernes played bass on it, Oystein's parents didn't want it to come out.' says Hellhammer. 'I thought it was appropriate that the murderer and victim were on the same record. I put word out that I was re-recording the bass parts. But I never did .

'With Attila's return, the band's fortune seems to have come full circle. The last date on the tour (Trondheim) feels eerily appropriate. Mayhem are due to play in a labyrinthine student building that sits directly opposite Nidaros-Domen, the grand cathedral whose silhouette graces the cover of De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. ('We used it because it was one of the most beautiful churches in Norway,' says Hellhammer. 'And Vikernes, of course, had planned to blow it up.')

Two crew members emerge from behind a long red curtain and theatrically hold up the pigs' heads before impaling them on microphone stands lined up at the front of the stage. As they do so, 1,000 wild-eyed metal fans, fuelled by 96 per cent proof home-made moonshine (the preferred drink of Norwegians up north) and drunk on blood lust, let out a delighted roar. When the curtain rises, the stage looks like a slaughterhouse. Another 16 slack-jawed pigs heads leer out from atop the amps. Attila stands front and centre, wearing his own take on the corpse-paint; an abstraction of the satanic goat of Mendes design transposed onto his features, distorting his face in a serpentine fashion. Black horns jut out from heavily shadowed eyes and up into his temples. He holds aloft a fearsome double-bladed dagger that looks like it could disembowel a horse; his lyrics emerge in an incomprehensible stream as a moaning death rattle. Behind him Mayhem sound like a band at war with the world. And possibly even themselves.

At the close of the show, Blasphemer puts down his guitar and furiously hurls a pig's head into the audience. Backstage he spits bile at his bandmates: the performance hasn't lived up to his exacting standards. Out front though, the crowd seem calm, satiated. One lucky teenage fan has secured a trophy. Girls surround the tall, handsome youth, cooing at the pig's head that hangs his side, as he grips it by the ear like a cherished toy animal.

Associated Press news item: Vatican still superstitious about SATAN!

The following Associated Press news item was found at:
http://www.beliefnet.com/story/161/story_16118_1.html

Vatican University Debuts Satanism Classes

Rome, Feb. 17 - In a classroom ringed by Rome's pine-covered hills, 100 priests solemnly stood in prayer, made the sign of the cross and got down to business: a lesson on Satanism, demonic possession and exorcism.

Worried about ritual killings in Italy and simple adolescent angst, a Vatican-recognized university launched the course Thursday to help priests and seminarians understand what makes people turn to the occult. The class is billed as the first of its kind, with wide-ranging instruction by exorcists, psychologists and a police criminologist.

The Pontifical Academy "Regina Apostolorum" wants to clear up misconceptions - especially about exorcisms, a practice most priests do not carry out.

"An exorcist once told me that he asked his bishop for advice and was told, 'Go figure it out by yourself," said Giuseppe Ferrari, secretary-general of the Socio-Religious Research and Information Group, co-sponsor of the class.

Thursday's lecturer, Rev. Gabriele Nanni, touched on the pitfalls of driving the devil from someone's body.

Priests must never be proud of their ability, remembering that they are merely conduits of Christ, he said. They must not perform exorcisms on people they suspect have psychological problems. And they should not get carried away and invent mystical gestures.

"Everything must be carried out in extreme sobriety," cautioned Nanni, an exorcist himself. Among the few acceptable tools are a crucifix and prayer.

In shop talk at the end of class, one priest admitted that in his decades of performing exorcisms, he wasn't always sure he was doing it right. Another asked if seances, for example, could leave people vulnerable to psychological problems.

"All contact with the occult and the esoteric is extremely dangerous," Nanni told the sea of priests in black jackets and white collars.

The class debuts as an Italian court prepares to try eight people believed to belong to a Satanic sect for their alleged role in three ritual killings. Sect members belonged to a heavy metal band called "Beasts of Satan."

One of the victims was a 19-year-old stabbed to death in 1998. She may have been targeted because her killers believed she was a personification of the Virgin Mary, prosecutors allege. Another victim was shot last year and buried alive.

Beyond the violence, Italian officials are concerned about young people who develop personal forms of Satanism, outside the sects closely monitored by police. They often learn about the devil through the Internet.

"It's a more spontaneous and hidden phenomenon, a problem of loneliness and isolation, a problem of emptiness, that is fulfilled by the values of Satanism," said Carlo Climati, an author who will teach a course on the devil's lure to young people.

The class at the academy - run by the Legionaries of Christ, a conservative order - drew both Italians and foreigners. Rev. Christopher Barak, who came from the Lincoln, Neb., area at his bishop's request, senses a renewed concern about the devil among Roman Catholics.

"In the '60s and '70s, people got away from that," Barak said. "Even theologians said, 'No, the devil is just a myth.'"

The course ends in April with the culminating lesson: "Testimony of an Exorcist." Two of Italy's some 400 exorcists are to tell their stories.

Widely accepted signs of possession - some of which were depicted in the 1973 movie, "The Exorcist" - include speaking in unknown tongues and demonstrating physical force beyond one's natural capacity. In 1999, when the Vatican issued its first new guidelines since 1614 for driving out devils, it urged priests to take modern psychiatry into account in deciding who should be exorcised.

The updated exorcism rite, contained in a red, leather-bound book, was a reflection of Pope John Paul II's efforts to convince the skeptical that the devil is very much in the world. At the time, he gave a series of homilies denouncing the devil as a "cosmic liar and murderer."

A former papal aide, the late Cardinal Jacques Martin, wrote in his memoirs that John Paul performed the exorcism rite in 1982, on an Italian woman who was screaming and writhing.

~ MARDUK Drummer Was Protecting Friend When Attacked With Baseball Bat ~
Swedish black/death metallers THE LEGION, featuring current MARDUK drummer Emil Dragutinovic, have issued the following statement regarding the incident over the weekend that resulted in Emil suffering a broken arm and unable to embark on MARDUK's previously announced European tour:

"On Saturday night [February] 12th, our drummer Emil and a close friend to the band was attacked by a group of five immigrants. Emil was trying to protect this friend of ours when a dude with a baseball bat suddenly attacked him. When trying to defend himself from the severe beating he broke his left arm. Emil's friend got seriously maltreated and is now hospitalised. Emil is now in plaster and he's unable to play the drums for some months. This means that the upcoming tour with MARDUK (Emil's other band) gets postponed and the recording of our new album gets delayed for a while too. This really sucks since we've had the new material ready for some time now and we where just waiting for Emil to be done with the tour."

THE LEGION's debut album, "Unseen To Creation", was released in October 2003 through France's Listenable Records. The CD, which was recorded at Abyss Studios with producer Tommy Tägtgren, features "ten songs of complex and eclectic black/death metal, ranging in style from MORBID ANGEL to SETHERIAL". The cover art was done by Kris Verwimp, who has previously worked with MARDUK, ABSU, SATHANAS, and IMMORTAL, among others.

~ BORKNAGAR To Record Acoustic Album ~
BORKNAGAR mainman Oystein G. Brun has issued the following statement regarding the group's current status:

    "Dear fans and associates,
'Having created epic metal for several years now, an idea and a vision has arisen within the BORKNAGAR camp, and we hereby want to inform you about how it will affect our forthcoming release: The next BORKNAGAR album will be an acoustic effort based entirely on the epic and progressive aspect of the band. The recording will commence this very spring, most likely in late May, at Toproom Studio in Norway as we are planning an autumn release.

"This is something we have wanted to do for many years now, and the idea has lingered within the band ever since the recording of 'Quintessence' and a few private sessions with a grand piano and an acoustic guitar. The album will be acoustic-based but largely arranged with a wide range of instruments and vocal styles. It will be recorded by the same line-up that did 'Epic', and we will be working with different locations during the recording process in order to catch the sounds of different acoustic environments. Musically the album will be rather dissimilar from what we have done before, though the unique BORKNAGAR sound will surly shine through.

"This is not a permanent change of the band's musical style, but rather a musical quest and a challenge for us as well as for our audience! The title of the album will be released soon."

~ NORTHER To Complete New EP This Week ~
Finland's NORTHER are currently mixing and mastering their new EP, "Solution 7", at Finnvox Studios in Helsinki. The band expect to be done with everything by the end of this week.

"Solution 7" is scheduled for release on March 30 in Finland via Spinefarm and June 13 in outside territories. The CD will reportedly contain five songs, including a re-recording of an old song. Recording sessions for the disc began on December 24 at Astia Studios in Lappeenranta, Finland.

NORTHER's third full-length album, "Death Unlimited", was released last year through Spinefarm Records.

As previously reported, NORTHER's Petri Lindroos has been named a permanent member of the Finnish folk-influenced melodic death metal band ENSIFERUM. Lindroos will handle the vocals and guitar in the group, which parted ways with singer/guitarist Jari Mäenpää in 2004. *(Thanks: Endless War)

~ VADER Nominated For Poland's FRYDERYK Award ~
VADER's latest CD, "The Beast", has been nominated in the "Best Metal Album" category at the Fryderyk awards, which is one of the most prestigious music award shows in Poland.

In other news, VADER have achieved the following results in Polish Metal Hammer's annual readers' poll:

Band Of The Year - 2nd
Album Of The Year - 3rd (for "The Beast")
Musician Of The Year - 1st (for Peter)
Famous Person - 1st (for Peter)
Hit Of The Year - 2nd (for "Dark Transmission")

VADER will enter Hertz Studio in Bialystok in early July to record a brand new mini-CD under the working title of "The Art of War".

The CD will be produced by the Wieslawscy brothers and will contain "three extremely intense and fast cuts and one song in the vein of the band's typical style," according to a posting on the group's web site. "The Art of War" will also contain a special bonus video clip for the title track. "It's going to be something really new, unconventional and powerful, expect the unexpectable (the production itself has taken almost 5 months)!" reads a posting on the band's web site.

VADER fulfilled their contractual obligations to Metal Blade Records with the release of their most recent effort, "The Beast" (2004), and are currently negotiating with several labels about a new deal. An announcement regarding the group's new label home will be made soon.

~ CHILDREN OF BODOM Guitarist Says New Album Won't Be 'Hate Crew Deathroll Part II' ~
According to the CHILDREN OF BODOM fan site Scythes-Of-Bodom.com, CHILDREN OF BODOM guitarist Alexi Laiho revealed in a recent interview some information about the progress of the songwriting sessions for their upcoming album. Despite his broken arm (which is said to have occurred when he fell from top of a car while intoxicated), he was able to compose some material during the past few weeks. He didn't want to reveal what the new stuff will be like, but he said that it wouldn't be a "Hate Crew Deathroll Part II" and would rather represent something new and fresh without sacrificing the elements that made CHILDREN OF BODOM unique (including keyboards and guitar solos). For the first time ever, Alexi has written lyrics for two songs before even composing the music for the tracks.

As previously reported, the album will be recorded in April-May in a studio in Helsinki with Mikko Karmila recording and mixing the album. However, the producer for the album hasn't been decided yet. The plan is for the group to include the title track of their recent EP, "Trashed, Lost & Strungout", on the new album, albeit possibly in a re-recorded form, since the original version was recorded at Astia Studio, which won't be the case with the rest of the album. (It wouldn't be the first time the band have done this, since "Hate Me!" was also recorded during both the single session in Astia and the "Follow the Reaper" session at Abyss studios.)

CHILDREN OF BODOM have been nominated for an award at the Finnish annual music award ceremony Femmagaala for "Mättöfemma", an award given out to a successful metal band. The other nominees are AJATTARA, DIABLO, MOKOMA and ROTTEN SOUND. Last year, CHILDREN OF BODOM won the "Export Award" at the Femmagaala in recognition of their worldwide success.

The Femmagaala 2005 ceremony will be held on February 25 at Helsinki's Nosturi.

In other news, Laiho has once again won the award for the best Finnish musician of the year by the Finnish music magazine Soundi, ahead of such other renowned musicians as Tuomas Holopainen from NIGHTWISH.

~ Doom Legends DREAM DEATH To Release Collection Of Rare Demos ~
Pittsburgh, PA's DREAM DEATH, who gained popularity among the metal underground in the Eighties, have returned to release "Back from the Dead" on Psychodoomelic Records. "Back from the Dead", compiled and produced by Mike Smail (currently in PENANCE, INTERNAL VOID and PENTAGRAM) is the official release of the three DREAM DEATH demos recorded in the mid-to-late Eighties.

The new release is 80 minutes long and includes a 20-page booklet featuring never-seen-before photos and show flyers. DREAM DEATH's popularity in the Eighties underground metal scene was recognized by many because of the unique ways they evolved traditional doom metal into their signature doom/death metal sound, which for critics and fans alike was a missing link at the time.

The band had one release, 1987's "Journey into Mystery", on New Renaissance Records, which is considered an underground classic. Shortly after the release of "Journey into Mystery", Ted Williams (bass) left DREAM DEATH to join crossover metal band EVICTION, who were later signed to Metal Blade Records. When EVICTION called it quits, Williams and EVICTION guitarist Rob Tabachka formed the garage punk band PILSNER, which lasted until 1996. After Williams' departure from DREAM DEATH, Mike Smail (drums), Terry Weston (guitar), and Brian Lawrence (guitar and vocals) reformed with a slightly modified line-up under the name PENANCE. Lawrence left PENANCE after two releases, but PENANCE continues today with Smail as the only remaining original member. In addition to PENANCE, Smail has also lent his drumming skills to CATHEDRAL, SILVER TONGUED DEVIL, INTERNAL VOID, and the legendary PENTAGRAM.

With the release of the "Back from the Dead", the original four members of DREAM DEATH have ignited an uncontrollable spark and are currently working on new material, as well as reworking some older songs to be released later in 2005.

~ TRISTANIA Keyboardist To Assume New Role ~
TRISTANIA keyboardist/programmer Einar Moen has "decided to assume a new role with the band," according to a posting on the group's web site. "He will not be accompanying them on tour - but fear not - he is still an active member and will use this period to work on new material. Many factors influence this decision - and he will re-evaluate whether to return to touring at a later date."

As previously reported, TRISTANIA have finished filming a video for the track "Equilibrium". Director Ralf Strathmann was flown in from Los Angeles to work on this project, which was completed in the old Tou Brewery in Stavanger, Norway.

TRISTANIA will support NIGHTWISH on a 10-date run through the U.K., Belgium and Germany beginning in mid-February. A South American tour with DARK TRANQUILLITY and KREATOR will follow in March. TRISTANIA's new album, "Ashes", was release last month through SPV Records

~ MOTÖRHEAD And CORROSION OF CONFORMITY Officially Announce Joint U.S. Tour ~
The immortal MOTÖRHEAD and mighty CORROSION OF CONFORMITY will hit the road for a North American tour in spring 2005.

MOTÖRHEAD - celebrating its 30th anniversary this year with a third career Grammy Award nomination - makes a triumphant return to these shores after a 2004 fall tour was canceled due to an injury suffered by vocalist/bassist Lemmy. At last, Lemmy, guitarist Philip Campbell and drummer Mikkey Dee are able to perform on this continent to promote their Metal-Is/Sanctuary Records release "Inferno". This remarkable album earned mountains of overwhelmingly positive reviews. In fact, the Associated Press called "Inferno" the best MOTÖRHEAD album ever.

"CORROSION OF CONFORMITY are a fine band as everybody knows. Also, they must be one of the few bands who have been going as long as MOTÖRHEAD! Still, we'll give them a run for their money!" says Lemmy. "Glad to have those boys along."

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, also known as COC, will give audiences a tantalizing taste of the blistering new Sanctuary Records album, "In The Arms of God", which is scheduled for release on April 5, 2005. Vocalist/guitarist Pepper Keenan, guitarist Woody Weatherman, bass guitarist Mike Dean and special guest drummer Stanton Moore (best known as a member of GALACTIC) have recorded an album of visceral power that's a worthy follow-up to 2000's "America's Volume Dealer". Scheduling conflicts will prevent Moore from touring with the band. Jason Patterson (CRY OF LOVE) will serve as COC's touring drummer.

"Lemmy and MOTÖRHEAD are to heavy metal and our roots what Johnny Cash is to country," says Keenan. "It's an honor and a privilege to deliver volume on the same stage...now up the fuckin' hammers! Not to mention we've got the baddest skulls in heavy metal!"

MOTÖRHEAD will also be performing at World Wrestling Entertainment's WrestleMania 21 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA, on Sunday, April 3.

~ CLUTCH Concert Stage Diver Convicted Of Lesser Counts ~
The Associated Press is reporting that a man who dived off the stage at a CLUTCH concert, injuring two women in the crowd, was found guilty of reduced charges Wednesday (Feb. 9) and put on probation for one year.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Nancy Fuerst convicted Joseph Seink, 34, of suburban Solon, on two misdemeanor counts of reckless assault. Seink, who agreed to a non-jury trial, could have faced eight years in prison if convicted on two counts of felonious assault.

Seink's attorney, Walter Camino, said he didn't think an appeal would be filed. "We're satisfied with the verdict," he said.

Authorities say two 28-year-old Cleveland women each suffered a cracked neck vertebra but no serious spinal damage when the 195-pound Seink landed on them last June 4 at the Scene Pavilion. Seink said he sneaked backstage to see the band CLUTCH and celebrated by jumping into the crowd when his favorite song began.

Witnesses testified that heavy metal shows are characterized by violent slam dancing with fans occasionally diving off the stage, expecting the crowd to catch them. The injured women, Catherine Tressa and Tammie Myers, both have said they didn't expect someone would jump off the stage during the concert

~ HYPOCRISY: New Album Due In September ~
HYPOCRISY bassist Mikael Hedlund has posed the following message on the group's official web site:

"Here's a little update from us for everybody who's been wondering what's been going on in the HYPOCRISY studio.

"Currently we are taking a break from the recording process since Peter Tägtgren is doing shows with PAIN. We will continue again next week.

"As for the album itself, we have no title yet but we can tell you that we are very satisfied with the results so far. There will be ten songs on the album in total, five of which still need vocals added to them. The plan is to finish the recordings before our U.S. tour in April with SOILWORK, MNEMIC and DARK TRANQUILLITY. The new album will most likely be released in September.

~ DISIPLIN: 'Anti-Life' Video To Premiere On Norwegian TV ~
Norwegian Black Metal horde DISIPLIN, featuring ex-members of MYRKSKOG and EVILIZER, will have a video for the title track from their new album, "Anti-Life", premiered Tuesday night (Feb. 1) on the "Svisj Metal" show on the Norwegian national TV channel NRK2.

The first-ever video for the Oslo-based quintet, "Anti-Life" was directed by the internationally acclaimed photographer Marcel Lelienhof and takes place in a derelict house in a boys' neighborhood. "Svisj Metal" airs Tuesday nights from midnight until 3:00 a.m.

DISIPLIN's second album, "Anti-Life" is scheduled for release this spring via Moonfog Productions. The CD will include 11 "demonic" tracks and a "blood-curdling, unholy" bonus video for the title track.

The follow-up to the group's 2003 self-titled debut was recorded at Akkerhaugen Lydstudio (EMPEROR, ZYKLON) and features a guest appearance by CARPATHIAN FOREST's Nattefrost (lead vocals on one track and backing vocals on a few others).

~ MSNBC: DARKTHRONE A Better GRAMMY Choice? ~
CONVERGE, SATYRICON and... DARKTHRONE...? Those are the unlikely alternate Grammy nominees suggested to MSNBC recently by "Sound of the Beast" author Ian Christe. "Then again," Christe told the Microsoft-backed news network, "DARKTHRONE already refused their nomination for the Norwegian version of the awards. These back-slapping events are viewed by most metalheads with a lot of skepticism."

Christe also told MSNBC this year's real Grammy nominees for Metal Performance (CRADLE OF FILTH, MOTÖRHEAD, HATEBREED, KILSWITCH ENGAGE, and SLIPKNOT) are "a shock... they actually represent what metal kids are into - instead of the usual out-of-date record company executive's misunderstanding of heavy metal... All five bands nominated began on indie-specialty labels, then worked their way to the mainstream over years. Normally, I'd hope in vain that MOTÖRHEAD would win, just as an excuse to see Lemmy wearing a tuxedo. But it would really be a boon to heavy metal for any of the younger bands to take the prize."

The Grammys will be handed out Feb. 13. The Metal Performance award will NOT(?!?!?) be televised.

~ BEHEMOTH: 'Conquer All' Video To Receive 'Headbanger's Ball' Premiere ~
BEHEMOTH's video for the track "Conquer All", taken from their latest album, "Demigod", will receive its "Headbanger's Ball" premiere this Saturday, February 5 at 10:00 p.m. EST on MTV2.

The "Conquer All" clip was directed by Joanna Rechnio and "the whole filming session took us about 11 hours," BEHEMOTH frontman Nergal said in a statement. "I believe we did a great job. It's for sure the best thing we have done so far."

"Demigod" was mixed by BEHEMOTH frontman Nergal and producer Daniel Bergstrand (MESHUGGAH, IN FLAMES) at Dug-Out studios in Uppsala, Sweden. Mastering duties were handled at the Cutting Room studios in Stockholm. A guest appearance by NILE's Karl Sanders is included in the track "Xul".

"Demigod" was released in October via Regain Records in Europe, Mystic Records in Poland, Raven Music in Israel and Irond in Russia

~ CRADLE OF FILTH T-Shirt Lands British Man In Court ~
Norfolk Eastern Daily Press is reporting that a British man who wore a heavy metal band T-shirt bearing an insulting picture and slogan pleaded guilty Monday (Jan. 31) to religiously aggravated offensive conduct.

Dale Wilson, 35, of Northfields, Norwich, was arrested by two police officers in The Avenues as he walked to a local newsagent to buy some tobacco on Halloween wearing a T-shirt promoting Ipswich band CRADLE OF FILTH.

The front of the T-shirt showed a sexual image of a nun while the back carried an extremely offensive reference to Jesus ("Jesus Is A Cunt").

He pleaded guilty to the charge and also admitted possession of a Stanley knife when he appeared at Norwich Crown Court on Monday.

Sentencing was adjourned for reports until March 11 and Judge Simon Barham warned him that all sentencing options would be open. Wilson was given conditional bail pending the next hearing

Former PESTILENCE members Martin Van Drunen (vocals) and Jeroen Paul Thesseling (bass) have teamed up in a brand new band called PROJEKT TABUN. PROJEKT TABUN was founded by Thesseling and KING LOCUST guitarist/producer Niels Drieënhuizen. The band, who recently spent time at at studio Het Lab in Schaarsbergen, the Netherlands, are describing their sound as "a unique blend of Moorish-oriented lines, brutal grunts and palmas rhythms." ~ QUORTHON's Collaboration With LAKE OF TEARS Guest Vocalist To See Light Of Day ~
Former LAKE OF TEARS guest vocalist Jennie Tebler and BATHORY mastermind Quorthon entered the studio in early 2004 to begin laying down tracks for a collaborative project, which they have dubbed "Silverwing". After the tragic loss of Quorthon in June of last year, Jennie is determined to have the collaboration released.

"Silverwing" features Quorthon's music and lyrics, as well as all instrumentation performed by the late BATHORY legend. The track, which will be issued as a digipack single, was recorded in March 2004 by Quorthon and Mikke Moberg and was mixed by Boss (a.k.a. Black Mark owner and Quorthon's father Börje Forsberg) in September 2004 and January 2005. The CD's layout was designed by Quorthon in January 2004. "Silverwing" will be issued as a digipack single on April 11 via Black Mark.

~ OVERKILL: Early Albums To Be Reissued On One CD ~
Megaforce Records will re-release OVERKILL's two classic early albums, "Fuck You and Then Some" and "Feel the Fire", on one CD February 22, 2005. These albums not only showcase the early years of the band, but also represent some of the finest early thrash metal.

New York thrash quartet OVERKILL formed in the early 1980s and these releases feature the classic line-up formed by vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth and guitarist Bobby Gustafson. After garnering a reputation for pounding speed and technique, OVERKILL became contemporaries of heavy hitters like METALLICA, TESTAMENT, and ANTHRAX.

1985's "Feel the Fire" is the full-length debut that made quite a splash within the heavy metal community. It possessed all the blistering riffs and complete abandonment fans would learn to expect from OVERKILL. With band classics like the title track and "Rotten to the Core", this release solidified a loyal fan base as the band expanded their sound. This classic original band lineup remains the fan's favorite and this album paved the way for OVERKILL, and ultimately helped define a generation of spastic and relentless metal.

1996's "Fuck You and Then Some" remains an unapologetic and in-your-face album that is a classic with thrash fans.

~ Guitarist JON LEVASSEUR Quits CRYPTOPSY ~
CRYPTOPSY guitarist Jon Levasseur has officially left the band. His statement on the matter is as follows:

"Jon Levasseur here writing to officially announce my departure from CRYPTOPSY. It is something I strangely felt coming on since a year prior to my departure (August 2004) as my inspiration for such extreme music was growing thin. After 10 years in the band, I now wish to step back, lay low and explore other things in music. Who knows, maybe one day this new chapter in my life could turn out into something interesting!

"That being said, I want to say that I'm very proud of what CRYPTOPSY has accomplished as a band and I consider myself extremely fortunate to have broken through boundaries with some of the best musicians in the business. So to Flo Mounier, Eric Langlois, Lord Worm and Alex Auburn, it's been a great ride guys, full of memories. Thanx for everything and for putting up with me!!! I also wish extend thanx to the ex-members club: Steve Thibault, Mike DiSalvo, Miguel Roy, Martin Lacroix, Martin Fergusson, Dave Galea and to the 6th member for the past 6 years, Maurice Richard and all other people who have been involved in the bands success!

"Finally, I want to thank every CRYPTOPSY fan on the planet. Because of your undying support, the band is able to bring its music around the globe and it made me live so many great things and experiences. I got to play for fans in many places in the world, some places even beyond my own expectations. Hail to you all, thank you and do look forward to the next CRYPTOPSY album! Long life to CRYPTOPSY!"

~ Cleveland Bands To Perform For College Radio Benefit ~
Five of Cleveland's top metal bands will be performing a concert on Monday, February 7 to benefit college radio station WJCU. The bands performing are: SOULLESS (Cleveland's undisputed death metal kings!), DESTRUCTOR ('80s power/thrash metal underground legends), ABDULLAH (stoner Doom Metal), AMPS II ELEVEN (MOTÖRHEAD meets the MC5 - revved-up rust belt rumble) and BLACK TRINITY (unholy Norwegian-style black metal). The concert will take place at Cleveland's newest club, the House of Blues. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to WJCU to help fund a recently approved power increase.

Cleveland is fortunate enough to be home to four powerful college radio stations - WJCU (John Carroll University), WCSB (Cleveland State University), WRUW (Case Western Reserve University) and WBWC (Baldwin Wallace College). The stations all work together to offer a steady weekly dose of heavy metal programming both online and to the Northeast Ohio listening audience. Cleveland's college radio scene is well-known throughout the music industry as being the best in the country.

~ Supremacists' Music Label Split After Race Allegation ~
SOUTH ST. PAUL, Minn. - A high-profile white supremacist record company appears to have gone out of business after one co-owner accused the other of having a Hispanic mother.

Panzerfaust was behind Project Schoolyard USA, which last year distributed thousands of free compact discs to teenagers across the country, particularly in Minnesota. The company is now appears dormant, with its Web address directing views to another white power site called "Free Your Mind." No working telephone number for the Panzerfaust could be found Friday.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, reports that co-owners Byron Calvert, 33, and Anthony A. Pierpont, 38, had a falling out after Calvert saw a copy of Pierpont's birth certificate. The document, which is posted on the center's Web site, indicates that Pierpont's mother was named Maria Marcola del Prado and she was born in Mexico. Also, Calvert claimed in an online posting that Pierpont had sex with Thai prostitutes.

As a result, and Pierpont's refusal to take a DNA test, Calvert wrote last month that he would quit the company and so would its webmaster. The center reports that influential hate groups Hammerskin
Nation and Volksfront also denounced Pierpont. The Free Your Mind site said that any business done with Pierpont should be considered "an act of treason".

~ STRATOVARIUS Mainman Refuses To Drop 'Hitler' Song From Upcoming Album ~
According to an article in the Finnish daily newspaper Iltalehti, STRATOVARIUS' record label is refusing to allow the group to release a newly recorded track featuring a sampled speech by Adolf Hitler.

The song, entitled "Hitler", was recently recorded by the group for inclusion on their next album. However, some of the executives at the German branch of the band's record label, Sanctuary, are objecting to the song's lyrical content and are threatening to pull the song from the album's final track listing.

"I won't give up on the song," Tolkki told Iltalehti. "This is a matter of principle.

"The German Interior Ministry has formed a branch dedicated to preventing youth from being exposed to the Nazi ideology. Our manager sent this special branch the lyrics to the song and the intro to be used in the beginning of the track [containing Hitler's speech]. It is up to them to judge if it is acceptable for release or not. If the Ministry sees this song as inappropriate, I will, of course, refrain from releasing it, and I will record a new version of the track that is acceptable. If, on the other hand, the song is found to be 'legal,' the record company should not have the right to limit my freedom of expression."

Tolkki says that he is certain the Ministry won't have anything against the song.

"It's as strongly against Hitler as a song can be," he claimed.

To prove this, Tolkki read the song's lyrics to the Iltalehti reporter. In the song, Hitler is described as a monster who spread fear across the world.

"These issues have to be discussed," Tolkki explained.

Tolkki said that he has been interested in Hitler-related literature for a long time.

"I have been interested in Hitler since I was a teenager," he said. "As far as I can tell, every child is innocent when born into this world. I'm interested in finding out what happens to turn an innocent child into a Hitler-type figure."

Tolkki said that he doesn't know yet how long it will take for the German Interior Ministry to make a decision regarding the song. However, he believes that it won't delay the making of the group's new album.

"This shouldn't affect that [the recording process for the new album]," he stated confidently. "I believe that we will get the clearance to release the song as it is. [This subject matter is something] that you must be able to talk about."

    Listen to MP3 clips above.

Militant Slavonic Black Metal rebellion from Ukraine's LUCIFUGUM-- the band's ninth recording of "anti-dogmatic wolfish poison", and their first full-length ever to be released on VINYL LP format!

Eight songs (total running-time: 46 minutes) of darkly atmospheric grim Nordic-influenced Black Metal recorded during the band's ninth year of existence, 2004. Clearly, an intentionally 'orthodox' approach in style, even more aggressive and Blackened in comparison to the previous Thrash-infused "...Back To Chopped Down Roots" album (also released by BlackMetal.com Records).

An old communique of interest (originally published Oct. 11, 2003)

The following communique (or "rant", if you will) should be of much interest to those willing to catch a glimpse into our minds and attitudes. Read on, and enjoy...

    * BlackMetal.com Mailorder update, October 11, 2003:

While there are quite a few "NEW ARRIVALS" to the website (such as the much-anticipated FORGOTTEN TOMB CD from Adipocere Records, with more on the way from both Adipocere and Oaken Shield in France!), this is a red-letter week heavy on the "RESTOCKS". For example, we've resorted to having to import much of the Hammerheart back-catalogue since the decline of the domestic versions from Hammerheart USA. Essential titles which have been listed as "temporarily not available" for the past months (such as MITHOTYN, THYRFING, HAGALAZ RUNEDANCE, CRUACHAN, the DIMMU BORGIR/OLD MANS CHILD split, AURA NOIR, AETERNUS, ALAS, CORONA BOREALIS, PRIMORDIAL, RAVENOUS, etc.) are now available again, albeit in limited quantities (until we can get more, of course)... When browsing our website, PLEASE remember that hundreds, literally thousands, of titles are currently available for ordering, and that the seeming proliferation of "not available" listings encountered are maintained strictly for "ARCHIVAL" purposes (think of this site as a vast archive of Extreme Black Metal reference, as many do!), plus we're always hoping and intending to re-stock those missing items! For us, the rich history of Metal and the vast scope of past releases is as much of a concern to us (as "true" die-hards), as it is for "trendies" who care only for the latest fashion, those late 'train-jumpers' unconcerned with the substance of original classics and pioneers before! Often-times complaints about seeing too many "temp n/a" listings are a sure sign of a "newbie" who has no idea about how we maintain our site. Our customers and friends, regular visitors to our site (often called "frontrunners" because they're quickest on the draw in terms of ordering as the early bird getting the worm) know to be patient, concentrating on what is actually available with confidence that impending "RESTOCK" listings are forthcoming. Re-stocks make past complaints of this nature moot and ultimately pointless; this is a fast-paced and dynamic environment, and we don't worry about transient and momentary concerns of this nature. We're always confident of our methods to satisfy our supporters. We cater to what can be considered an "elite" crowd-- for those of you in this alliance, our site is easy to navigate, problems finalizing your orders are minimal, payment methods are secure and stress-free, all the nerve-wracking "retail-experience" heartbreak of acquiring that all-important slab of Extreme Blackened noise to enhance your life is avoided with a few easy clicks of a mouse or keyboard!

Not only do we endeavor to bring in the latest in-demand releases ("NEW ARRIVALS" such as those by FUNERAL MIST, ONDSKAPT, DIMMU BORGIR, DEMONCY, MOONTOWER, SATANIC WARMASTER, IRON MAIDEN, etc.; and "RESTOCKS" such as the LORDS OF CHAOS Book by Blood Axis' Michael Moynihan, numerous titles on Red Stream, Osmose, No Colours, Head Not Found, the aforementioned Hammerheart, KRISTALLNACHT, DESTRUCTION, SODOM, MARDUK, etc., plus a forthcoming Century Media shipment early next week!), we're also working to constantly expand the available offerings of "VINTAGE" titles, BOOKS, SHIRTS, and other merchandise of interest-- all in an effort to make available to you, as easily as possible, those thing which enhance your Extreme Black Metal lifestyle! If you were to walk into a "new age" or metaphysical store (which are usually oriented towards wicca or "white" magic), you won't find Satanic Baphomets with inverted pentagrams or goats! For those of you who wish to display the trappings of Black Metal imagery in your personal domain (like the WWII collector or even the neo-NS racialist who feels the need to hang up Swastika flags or death's head banners), we understand that most mainstream retail avenues fail your requirements!

We do not bow down or capitulate to the ignorant dictates of self-proclaimed "taste-makers" (just another word for "trendy" in disguise!) who attempt to criticize our tried-and-true methods! We have existed successfully for long enough to know that the vexations of immature, new to the scene "gurus" are but temporary annoyances. As the independent nihilistic gun-enthusiast libertines that we are, we proudly exist and operate on our Satanic terms, and if these irritants (so-called "guardians of the Scene") do not understand this, then they have no business being in the Black Metal Scene! These "guardians of the Scene" actually hurt, not help, the Scene-- they contribute nothing to the success of the precious bands they seek to "protect"; they would rather see Underground bands wallow and flounder away in obscurity and premature aging or demise! The bands exist independently of us, but it is WE who are most productive in HELPING the audience to find the bands. Our mortal enemies, the worthless couch potatoes who are most vocal about the "purity" of the Scene are the most unproductive lot, their ignorant negativity seeking to bring everyone else down to their pathetic level-- they contribute nothing to the richness and dynamic of the art and lifestyle; for them, a receptive audience of equally ignorant "followers" (or "meat-heads") is their fantasy. They invent imagined "crusades" to give their dead-end lives meaning. They want to make Black Metal a fraternity (while under the guise of being a "rebel") like rap or hip-hop, when we value multi-dimensional individuality and transformed or exhilarated self-autonomy. We don't need any more messiahs-- that's for christians and other spiritually enlsaved. When being forced or subjected to the tiresome whining and moaning tirades of these "taste-makers", "guardians of the Scene", self-proclaimed gurus (in actuality closeted frat-boy, pimp-wannabee's), you have only to consider their past contributions (positive or negative?), and consider the source (too), to be able to make up your own mind. The Scene is full of con-artists; beware of SHEEP in wolves clothing!
