GIRLSCHOOL Guitarist Dies (RIP)

~ Girlschool Guitarist Loses Battle With Spinal Cancer ~

posted Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at 06:44:14 AM by Diamond Oz.

MOTÖRHEAD
has issued the following update:

"It is with extreme sadness to inform you that Kelly Johnson, original lead guitarist of GIRLSCHOOL, passed away on Sunday night, 15th July. She has been suffering from spinal cancer for the last six years.

"Joining GIRLSCHOOL in 1978, Kelly was a face in the classic line-up alongside Kim McAuliffe (rhythm guitar, vocals), Enid Williams (bass, vocals) and Denise Dufort (drums). The band was an integral and major force in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement, beginning with the release of its debut album, 'Demolition' (1980), and continuing with the follow-ups 'Hit 'n' Run' (1981) and 'Screaming Blue Murder' (1982). Kelly's participation also saw GIRLSCHOOL collaborating with MOTÖRHEAD under the name HEADGIRL for the 'St. Valentine's Day Massacre' EP. Both bands appeared on the lead track 'Please Don't Touch' and covered each other's songs, GIRLSCHOOL choosing 'Bomber' and MOTÖRHEAD picking 'Emergency'.

"Watch the 'Please Don't Touch' (MOTÖRHEAD and GIRLSCHOOL) video at YouTube.

"Kelly originally left GIRLSCHOOL in 1984 after recording the band's fourth album, 'Play Dirty', to live in Los Angeles for the next ten years. She rejoined in 1993 and moved back to the U.K. In 2000, she decided to quit the music business for good after recording her final album with GIRLSCHOOL, 'Not That Innocent: 21st Anniversary' (2001), though always remained a close friend to the band.

"Kelly Johnson (RIP) will be missed heavy-heartedly by all. Our deepest condolences go out to her family and friends."

~ SUMMON: R.I.P. ~

SUMMON
is dead. Long live SUMMON. Says guitarist/vocalist Sean Xaphan Peters, "I tried to keep it going, but things have just changed. After a year of not playing together, Josh [Moore, drummer] and I tried to get something going but all the time apart...we just did not see musical directions the same anymore. He is more into technical speed and I am more into raw feeling and power, so we just grew apart with the distance." Meanwhile, Xaphan is keeping busy with his pure black metal holocaust Dark Psychosis, who should have a new album completed in a couple months, with drums done by WIND OF THE BLACK MOUNTAINS skinbeater Nybras. ~ DYING FETUS Announces New Drummer ~

Death metal juggernaut DYING FETUS has issued the following update:

"We would like to announce the addition of new drummer Trey Williams, from Baltimore, MD. We regret it has become necessary to part ways with Duane Timlin (KRIEG). However, we thank Duane for his contributions to the band and we wish him the best in his future endeavors. This lineup change will not have any effect on our tour plans, which will go ahead as scheduled. Trey gave us a fantastic audition; we have seen first-hand that he has the professionalism and dedication we would expect. We look forward to our next tour plans with great confidence. We feel the fans will agree that this change will be good for the band and our live performances."

DYING FETUS
will embark on the North American leg of its "War of Attrition Tour" in early June. This portion will cover ground all across Canada and into the Northern U.S. Joining DYING FETUS on various dates of the tour are , and more.

DYING FETUS
recently concluded a headlining European and North American tour in support of its new album, "War of Attrition".

~ SEASON OF MIST President Talks About UNDERGROUND ACTIVISTS Division ~

Season of Mist Records has issued more information on its recently announced Underground Activists division.

Regarding what exactly Underground Activists stands for, Season of Mist president Michael Berberian said, "It's basically bands we wanted to sign but that we couldn't sign with SOM. We always wanted Season of Mist to be opened, to explore new genres, to promote the bands to the best of our ability... It's never been a radical label. The goal always was to make it, if possible, 'big,' to turn SOM into a key player on nowadays metal scene. Underground activist will be the total opposite. It's about the most Necro, the most anti commercial, the controversial bands that we like. Bands that wouldn't fit into the SOM roster.

"Since our roots, our personal tastes and musical history are strongly leaning towards the underground, and that despise the trends and all the changes, we always kept an eye on what was happening there, we decided to take a more active part. To us, it feels like paying our dues to a scene that since the tape trading days, helped most of us to shape our musical taste, and made us want to work in music!

"So expect some obscure reissues and some more signings. Basically, it will be just stuff that, we feel, deserves to be released, to be out there, even if they will only appeal to 0.1% of the most extremists of the metal scene."

The first Underground Activists release, BESTIAL MOCKERY's "Slaying the Life", will be issued on August 20 in Europe and September 18 in North America.

~ DODSFERD Completes Work On New Album ~

Hot on the heels of the project's well-received "Fucking Your Creation" debut for Moribund Records earlier this year, one-man black metal army DODSFERD has already completed work on the next epic of misanthropic violence. Titled "Cursing Your Will to Live", this CD picks up where its predecessor left off, offering both shorter blasts of blackened bile and more extended journeys into mainman Wrath's ravaged psyche. NEW LONG-AWAITED CURSE / SYKDOM split CD AVAILABLE NOW!

CURSE/SYKDOM

CURSE/SYKDOM

(Massemord; Fortid / Potentiam / Thule / Withered)

"In Life & In Death/Verden og Fanden" (split)

FORMAT: CD
RELEASE DATE: JULY 3 2007
RELEASE #: BMC666041CD

*(Note: "Verden og Fanden" translation is "the World and the Devil")

SYKDOM's half of this high-calibre split-album was recorded during the cold Winter months (January and February) of early 2007 as an interim bridge between the previous album "Under Krigen" and the next [forthcoming] full-length SYKDOM album. "Verden og Fanden" is a mesmerizing, epic, and powerful blend of the mid-paced atmosphere of the "Mjollnir (That Smashes)" album and the aggressive, (semi) power-oriented triumph of "Under Krigen". Evocative, nostalgic, yet still remaining brutal, and definitely in the signature SYKDOM / MASSEMORD vein. Vocals and recording by Lord Hastur Warmachine.

Icelandic Black Metal veterans CURSE's contribution to this split-CD features one very long song (20 minutes, indexed as 4 tracks) recorded during the "Slaughter of Stars" sessions; the continuation and conclusion of a track that appears on the previous full-length album as "In Life and in Death, Part I". On the surface, very similar in atmosphere to SYKDOM's previous releases (though unintentional, since CURSE's tracks were recorded long ago), CURSE's half of this split is also mesmerizing in a driving way-- progressive Nordic Metal for long sea-going voyages, or for general 'life-in-the-fastlane' journeys. Die-hard fans of CURSE might be surprised at the inclusion of a distinctly Icelandic style of Blackened 'Shoegazing' part in the middle of one of the song's movements that is light years beyond current NACHTMYSTIUM tangents. A successful 'experiment' of sorts, but good evidence of the dynamic creativity from the genius also directly associated with POTENTIAM, FORTID, WITHERED, and THULE! Hails to Eldur and Electric Horizon Records in Iceland!
*(Note: Eldur also sings on SYKDOM's "Under Krigen" CD)
