SIGH DREAD dreams Overly-long bio & hype courtesy of Cacophonous Records:
Sigh were formed in 1989, originally covering thrash and black metal songs from the early 80's. The songs of Bulldozer, Venom, and Whiplash were gradually interspersed with their own original material, culminating in 2 demos [on Wild Rags Records] in 1990: 'Desolation' and 'Tragedies'. These cassettes hi-lighted the sheer individualism of their music at a time when mundanity of the death metal scene was swiftly becoming apparent: a divine brutality coupled with a melodic guitar and keyboards that swiftly made them a cult name in the underground.
This cult status lead to the release of a single on Wild Rags, 'Requiem For Fools', which brought them to the attention of Euronymous. He signed them to his label Deathlike Silence Productions and the band began recording their debut album 'Scorn Defeat'. Recordings from the session revealed the music of Sigh to be some of the most creative the underground has spawned; interpreting themes of tragedy and loss, Ritual and Supernature.
Unfortunately, the now infamous murder of Euronymous in 1993 resulted in the postponement of the album's release. It was during this hiatus that Cacophonous originally approached Sigh, with the intent of releasing the album, but the band chose to commit themselves to a release through DSP (via Voices Of Wonder) as a tribute to its late founder. However, the initial contact brought about the release of a split single with the Greek band Kawir and cemented a relationship which led to the band signing to Cacophonous for further CD releases.
The first full length album release on their new label was the Autumn 1995 release of 'Infidel Art', which again showed the band to be true creatures of imagination, incorporating a true myriad of styles that transcend the barriers of any given genre. Even the cover art was unique in its being the first to showcase the ancient Japanese form of painting known as Ukiyo-E. The albums release coincided with Sigh's first tour outside Japan, playing six shows in the UK and Eire with Hecate Enthroned and Primordial. Further shows in their native Japan introduced them to hither- to ignorant Japanese metal fans.
In late 1996, the band entered the studio to record the tracks that became the mini-album 'Ghastly Funeral Theatre', originally intending the tracks to form part of a collaboration with Japanese black metal band Abigail. Due to stubbornness on the part of Abigail's new label, the idea was abandoned and the tracks were released in a prelude to their intended album, 'Hail Horror Hail'. 'Ghastly Funeral Theater' was their first release dedicated in its entirety to the Japanese occult traditions of Dakini and Izuna - a sinister magickal form with the intention of seeking Nightdead (occult knowledge or gnosis).
Reviews of the material shared a common thread, the lauding of the new Sigh material as something akin to a masterpiece, awakening interest in a jaded public and bringing the expectation for the new album to heights unheard of-- finally their presence was being felt. The album was intended as a movie without pictures and the result was a soundtrack to a perverse horror film, which received much acclaim - polling in at number 9 in the best albums of 1997 in Terrorizer. . The lyrical themes revolve around the concept of horror, in all its macabre and majestic beauty, whilst the sounds of the musicians of Sigh have utilized encompass the many influences that go into the writing of their songs. Elements of Avant-Garde, Jazz, Swing, and Classical vie with contemporary notions of dark ambient, thrash metal and black metal music. 'Hail Horror Hail' is a listening experience you will not have encountered before.
Whilst 'Hail Horror Hail' was the result of a musical experiment to create a form never heard before, 'Scenerian IV: Dread Dreams' is another vein entirely. The songs seem to be in a more traditional heavy metal style, but all at once they metamorphose into a very different song; eclectic piano pieces, dark waltzes, psychedelic rock, stirring marching music, female operatics, weird lullabies. The effect is to create a dream like state, you follow the music not fully knowing where you resurface and whether you are fully awake.

Sigh's latest (1997), a five song EP (23 minutes) of distinctively unique & original Japanese Black Metal to help tide us over as we all await their next, sure to be an instant classic (like the others), full-length album! A conventional take on Celtic Frost-based grandiose Metal with dynamic instrumentation (as always, with epic neo-classical keyboards), & enough contradictions to keep us, the listener, guessing as to what this Tokyo trio will come up with next. Still, there's lots of what we've come to expect: gasping, raspy grim BM vokills, swirling cacophony of symphonic keyboards, doomy technical grind-based structures, explosive Venom-esque rockin' thrash, & oh yeah, sleeve artwork (Japanese Ukiyoe print) to die for!
Imported from England (on Cacophonous Records!).
