Interview with Funeris of Sin Origin

posted at:  http://www.geocities.com/killingspreerecords/sinorigininterview.html

1. How and when did Sin Origin begin?
Sin Origin officially started in mid-1999. N. Infernum and myself began playing together when we first picked up our respective instruments in December of 1998.

2. Have you had any previous bands or have any current side projects?
We were not involved in any musical endeavors prior to Sin Origin. At this time, I am not involved with any side projects. N. Infernum, however, will be contributing drum tracks (as a session member ONLY) to several Black Metal projects in the near future.

3. Who are your biggest influences?
When Sin Origin began it was quite different. We were very much into "holding" the genre back by emulating much of the older Black Metal acts of the late 80s and early 90s. Things have changed, however. We believe in the evolution of Black Metal. Rehashing ideas that have been fully explored will not help it to survive. Wallowing in the past will only further the degeneration of the art. Progression is key to our music above all other things! We have ALWAYS been influenced by self-autonomy and the unwavering form of the Satanic will.

4. How would you describe a live Sin Origin show?
A non-stop flow of black Satanic energy! We perform as a two-piece, but don't let that distort your opinion of Sin Origin's live presence! Performing as a two-piece is extremely personal and above all, ceremonial to both Sin Origin and our audience. We do the job of a three-piece and are often told that we sound like a full band. N. Infernum handles all of the drums and percussion and I handle all guitars and vocals.

5. What is Ohio's metal scene like?
There is little to no Black Metal scene in Ohio. We do, however, have some of the most avid supporters of the art. Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati are the epicenters of extreme metal in Ohio. A few bands are blossoming here and there, but other than that there aren't many relevant projects coming from Ohio.

6. Any plans for a future tour?
We are in the early stages of setting up live dates for the latter half of 2005, which will include several dates within the continental United States. We are also in the process of setting up a string of dates in Europe and possibly in Japan.

7. What inspires Sin Origin's lyrics?
The Principle of Isolate Intelligence, depression, nihility... but particularly myself. Sin Origin's lyrics are subconsciously generated from within the depths of who I truly am. Our lyrics embody NOTHING having to do with fantasy, nature or dwelling on the forgotten laurels of the past eroded by time alone. But who am I to say how my art should be interpreted? In the realm of art, I feel it is extremely important, if not paramount to paint ambiguity into one's work. My lyrics are representative of this. I am also highly influenced by the philosophies set forth by the TOS (Temple Of Set), which include the exploration of an individual's personal inner darkness and the worshipping of oneself using the Egyptian god Set as a role model. In his place, however, I honour and model after the rebel demoness Lilith.

8. I noticed that some of your songs are extremely long. How does Sin Origin's writing process work?
For us, our method of songwriting is cerebral process. We do not sit and needlessly dissect our music as we are fully confident in our abilities to compose. The songs are entities in themselves and are only as long as they need to be.

9. Besides music, how to you spend your free time?
Not much as Sin Origin is my main priority. I do read quite a bit, however. I tend to be more inclined to read philosophy, Ayn Rand's viewpoints on Objectivism intrigue me. I do not read fantasy or sci-fi. The Greek tragedies are also a source of interest for me. Euripedes was perhaps the greatest of all the tragedians. He was far beyond his time, focusing on the personal force of the human will and passion.

10. Where do you see Sin Origin in 5 years?
Be it tomorrow or the following day, next week or next year, Sin Origin will always remain as a purely artistic essence. To achieve acclaim from the masses is not our prerogative, though we shall not sit idly in the underground. That would render our presence obscure and difficult to discover. Regardless, no matter what our position may be or where we stand in the eye of the public (within the next 5 years) we will remain true to ourselves and to the art we create. Sin Origin is a weapon in itself, it is a manifestation of our will to stratify above mediocrity and human waste. To our followers-rest assured, we will never release anything that we ourselves find flaw in!

11. Thanks for the interview. Any final comments?
Our official debut, "In The Presence Of A Dread Magician," should be available this week (June 13th or 14th, 2005) through Blackmetal.com Records. All members of the world's Black Metal factions, should obtain a copy. It WILL prove to be an important release for U.S. Black Metal!
